#33706, "Detonation at 10 psi."

Well I got my head stud nuts torqued to 90lbs finally and I also changed my brake pads and got a new battery. The car is runnign great. I have 1200 miles on the new engine and I turned the boost up to 10-11 psi. I can hear detonation at this boost level. So I guess tomorrow I am going to turn the boost down to like 8 psi and see if it still makes the noise. I have a bad TPS on ym car and I am gettign a weird idle. I bought a new TPs today and I am going to put it on the car and hope this clears up some of my problems. Maybe it has something to do with my car detonating at such a low boost level. I thought our cars wont detonate at only 10 psi but I guess I was wrong. I really need to get some sort of timing retard system on the car.

good question. I know you know what the EGT and AF readings should be but I find it puzzling that it would audibly detonate at such low boost with everything in order, especially since I NEVER heard any detonation @ 10psi with 10.5C and you know I ran the barbaric FMU, walbro and stock injector combo. Did you check your plugs and what do they look like, have any CELs ect? Damn a Datalogger really would do wonders for you.

I agree with Stan.

Definitely pull ALL four spark plugs and examine them. It's better they're more black than whitish right now. They're a great clue in discerning whether or not you're getting enough fuel to all four cylinders. Do you have your EGT gauge set up?

IF you have a faulty TPS then that will most certainly contribute towards the detonation.....

You always have to remember the ECU takes into account all of the inputs - MAP, TPS, AIT, Crank angle, Cam Angle, A/F.... etc. etc...

IF one of the inputs is reading incorrect it will fool the ECU into running incorrect timing....

I would suggest you put the TPS on right away..

Also are you using an SAFC? IF so if your dropping the MAP voltage with it then that will advance tuning also.....

Replace that TPS sensor, check your plugs and give us an update. I think you may be in the clear once you replace that bad sensor......

Well I changed the tps and I think I am not hearing anymore detonation. Myabe I was being paranoid before. I have no clue but I know that I wasnt hearing anything today whne boosting. The bad news is my idle is still lumpy like before. Looks like I am going to change out the IAC sensor next week and see if that helps the idle. And whoever invented torx screws should be shot!

instead of changing the iac motor, grab a multimeter etc and check the resistence etc on it before going and spending money for it... takes a matter of 2mins once its off to check.. better then spending over $100 bucks.. also i heard the ecu controls the iac motor, that is what a friend from a mitsu dealer told me. if its too low of a idle, have it check out, if you know someone at the dealer, and they can hook up there scan tool and up your idle a bit..
good luck

I have checked the ohm resistence before and it checked out ok. I dont see how it could be anything else. This lumpy idle started after my first rebuild. And at first I thought it was my timing might have been off a tooth or something. But my timing belt has been taken off and put back on about 4 times since then. So I know for a fact the timing is fine. The only thing I can think of causing it is a sensor. I changed the tps. The only sensors left are the cam, crank, and IAC. It has to be one of those things causing this weird idle.

ANd the idle isnt to low it is at around 820-880. But whne it is idleing at like 950+ the lumpyness goes away. But the cart is supposed to idle at around 850 from what I can rememeber.

Dave's car is not lumpy, he's a liar, its hardly noticeable at all unless you are a paranoid nutcase like him, it happens sometimes, not all. So dont listen to him.
