first the car is a 95 eclipse GS its already 8 years old wow... lol and also, it has 154,000 miles but the compression is all above 200 should i really worry about it i mean i just saw a post of a guy boosting at 5 psi and his engine went? what other things should I look out for? I am planning on rebuilding in the near future because it will need it but I am hoping to keep boosting as long as I can before I have to... Also what boost would you recommend me going with I am getting the HRC Stage 2 w/ SMIC

Seriously change your sig that is gay as hell soldier.
My opinion is if you don't have the knowledge or pocketbook to rebuild than I wouldn't go turbo. If my engine blows I really won't care because it is expected.

Let's make this an easy one huh Power Ranger,Okay Turboing now is like giving speed to a 98 year old man-Go ahead and rebuild, with a beefed up bottom end to allow for more versatility incase stage 1 is not good enough on down the road, you're already at 150k so dont tamper with your engine and kill it before it's time, with the winter months coming faster than a mofo it should get you through into next year easy so u got some time to kill if lucks on your side-ahight you trackin, then go ahead and turbo after the rebuild so you will have some longevity in your setup, start planning 3,6,9 months out so u can get your papers straight because it's gonna cost you. Don't really worry about how old your car is, you can always do conversion and make it look like a 99 after every thing else. PEACE!

Yes, I totally agree and I have the pocket book to cover anything that will happen thats why I waited so long on turbo... but is there any recommendations that I can have ie, pushing no more then 7 psi or?

You should be just fine running 5 psi, even 7 psi. PROPER TUNING is the key here. You can blow a brand new, built engine if not tuned correctly. The fuel delivery setup is of most importance here. Tune it for plenty of fuel under boost, and you will be fine for a long time. If your compression numbers were around 200 psi, thats DAMN good for 150,000+ miles on the motor. I get that with 75,000 miles on my car, before and after running from 5 to 10 psi. I have to agree fully with the others too. Have money on hand. You WILL need it at one point or another. I will also say that anyone who wants to have a good running engine, and turbo setup, be a good, capable, knowledgable person when it comes to working on the engine/turbo. It will get quite expensive if you have to take the car to a shop to fix every problem or quirk that comes up. Learn all you can now about the setup, and what you need to do tuning wise for whatever set up you will run.

The problems are almost always from tuning..not the turbo. You can blow up any motor if your not careful. There are plenty of power adder cars out there with over 100,000 miles that are driven hard and still run great. If you have some knowledge about turbos and the work involved I would say turbo it. If you have to bring it to a shop...don't do it. Even if you have the right setup and all the gauges...you need to know how to read them and what do do if you have a problem. If it was me..I'd turbo it the way it is..why not? If you have good compression the engine must have been maintained good so no worries. Run around 7-8 psi and play it safe. The HRC FPR makes for a rich running car anyway so that adds a bit of safety. Get a A/F gauge, EGT, and a FP gauge to keep an eye on everything...and know how to read whats going on in your engine. It sounds like you must keep good care of it if it has that many miles and still runs good...keep it up! Don't be afraid of the turbo!! BOOST is GOOD!!!

That's good stuff, now I've also learned a little bit more myself that I didnt know. Im at 79 now and Im going to turbo first but all the while I'll be setting some snaps aside for the rebuild later on.

I agree with the guys--tuning is key. You should be able to run 7-8 psi safely, if you have optimal fuel and ignition setup. And, sometimes, even with proper fuel and ignition, some of us still had cracked piston ring lands. Having all the necessary parts--gauges, electronics, sensors, etc--isn't enough. You have to carefully monitor those things and know what to look for, and what to hear, sometimes. I guess proper tuning, along with the condition of your engine and DRIVING habits, all contribute to the life a turbocharged engine. Just my 2 cents

It really needs to be pointed out here that the post you are refuring too was not about a motor blowing at 5psi!!!! It was about a motor that had a serious boost spike to 14-15psi because a hose blew off. Read the rest of that post and you'll see what I mean. Stock internals can't handle that much boost. My car has 101xxx miles on it too and I'm doing just fine at 8psi on a star kit. The guy's ablve are pretty right on. I would say go ahead and turbo it. What state are you in anyway. If it gets bad in the winter there then I would wait. Just because you have to be able to work on the car if something goes wrong. So unless you have a grage I prolly would wait till spring - summer. These systems are reliable on stock motors. But every motor will go eventually, does turbo bring that on faster..... maybe. It could go another 1,000 miles or another 100,000 miles, nobody knows. Since you have the money to rebuild I say turbo it and stay within the kit limits for max boost and you'll be fine. My car has the same compression as yours so I say go for it... Boost away. But since your in PA I would wait till spring. Your car sounds ready to go so I say boost away... happy horsepower
BTW here is the rest of that post LAST EDITED ON 26-Oct-02 AT 07:47 PM (PST)
Been bummed at work so haven't had time to check the board. compression testing yeild: (cylinder1-4) 190, 155, 200, 90
Yeah something broke.
Also found the problem. The boost-wastegate signal hose blew off, hence spooling it to 1.10 bar (blitz TT recorded). So yeah 235cc definitely can't handle 14.7+ psi of pressure.
I pray it is only pistons and not any of my valves, as well hoping no overboring will be necessary.
Block only has 57k on it, and blow by through the dipstick is minimal. Car still idles fine, so I hope it will just be a straight forward operation.
What are some of the other things I can replace while everythign is apart? timing belt related parts?...etc
oh and what is this Howell replacement block I've been hearing about? thanx
