Well fellas I may have actually hit a good break here. I have a friend with a 98 Neon that has a rod thrown through the oil pan. He is going to give me $2,000 to fix it, wich means he is going to give me enough money to build a motor for my talon and put my motor back in his car to sell it. So Dino and all others with rebuilding skills I may be hassling you soon. I may go ahead and get a pre built short block from howell. As long as his car is in good running order to sell it's all good. So what do you guy's think I should do? How would you go about handling all this stuff? Also for you guy's who have pulled motors, How long do you think it will take a first timer to pull the engine? (I have done timing belt replacements and all so I'm not clueless, And I may have Corbin helping)

Personally, I would build the motor yourself. If you look around and find some good prices, you could have a built bottom end and still have enough money left to start working on your new fuel system and maybe even ignition, too. I am probably going to get some forged wiseco pistons. They're cheaper than je's (they're like $369/set), and alos use eagle rods($240 when bought at same time as pistons). Go to raceeng.com, that's where these prices are at. But alot of saving some money will depend on what prices a machine shop will charge you to bore or hone your block. My block has been honed and my machinist friend says it it still in perfect shape, so no need to go to oversize pistons.

Well I bought the howell block, and if I were to do it all over again, I would have saved the $ and built it myself without a doubt. If you use a cherry picker and pull the engine out with the tranny, it shouldnt take long to pull at all. If you pull the head, then pull out the block seperate from the tranny, plan on spending about a day on it, although you can definately do it in 1/2 day. XtremeRS and I rebuilt his motor and put it all back together in one day (but we've done it about 4 times now haha)...

I got my 2.0 block from a 95 neon SOHC. It was at a u pull it type of junk yard, so I had to do all the work myself. I paid $75 for the crank, block, bedplate, a couple sending units and a few other odds and ends. It really just depends on where you look, who you know, what junkyards are close to you and things like that. I'm not sure how much on average a 2.4 goes for, but you'll have to do a bit more work to put the 2.4 in there also.
