Impressive of course! The damn thing really pulls now, especially in the high end. That's with about 1 psi less too. Of course when I installed the intercooler, I expected to have some pressure drop and it's nice to see it's only 1 psi.

Other things I noticed were the onset of boost is now even more smooth. It comes on stronger, yet more linear and less abruptive. Additionally, a big difference is during decceleration. Sometimes when I deccelerated w/out the intercooler, it would hesisitate uncomfortably. Now, that's gone. Spool-up speed is still very nice. I can't tell a difference in spool-up lag. It might be 300 or so rpm's more when full boost comes. It was also satisfying last night to take it for a VERY HARD run and feel the intercooler and pipes before and after. The pipes before the I/C were very warm. The intercooler itself as well as the pipes after it were ICE COLD. emoji Oh...one more thing, the damn thing looks mean as hell!

Other noteables. I still need to take off the bumper and cut out a little of the bumper reinforcement. The intercooler is fairly tall and with the top pipe that comes across, it really runs close and effects the bumper's fitament. I'm going to cut some of it out.

Skrilla,

I bought a starion front mount a long time ago. I've done plenty to it including a nice polish and increasing the inlet and outlet sizes to 2.25". It's extremely efficient I would guess for all the boosting I'll need for awhile. From what I hear people at DSMtalk running with it, it's ample for at least 15 lbs of boost or so. Like I said though, quick spool-up, COLD temps, and a nice price to boot.

Mick,

No couplings yet man. I used some of those plumbing couplings you can get anywhere. I planned to use em till you get them shipped to me. Really weird man. Noone has ever had any difficulty ever sending anything to me. Both the mailpeople and UPS know me real well, so you musta really had the address off.

Hope to see em soon man! The reducer would really come in handy!

The rest,
Absolutely right about the looks, though. I used a digital camera out in the sun, so I'm not really pleased with the pics, but the front mount really looks great. (muuch better in person) I mounted it during sort of a car club get together with a neon owner. Everyone was asking me,..."is it a Greddy? What kind of intercooler is it?" I kept telling em' "It's off a starion." All the honduh owners still had no clue. emoji finally a 1g GSX owner came over. Suffice it to say, he was really impressed.

By the way, I took a lot of pics of my car along with these...(under pics at my site)

any pics of how you ran the pipes? What did you use to get it so clean (mine needs a good cleaning before it goes on)?

Man, that thing looks sweet! Thats the first time I've seen your car with the Prokits on it. Now with the intercooler, that thing is gettin' bad azzzz! You've got to run that thing, you've had your kit for awhile now. Time to start getting some times. More times I see, the more I want a turbo. I figure after I hear that most of you guys are turning low 14's - high 13's, I'll trade in the old blue bottle for some real pressure!

LAST EDITED ON 02-Apr-01 AT 06:42 AM (PST)

Mucho thanks for the props, guys! I'm really pleased as well.

MWC,

The piping ran very similar as yours did. I saw I had a couple of options with it. I can either hang the intercooler lower as I think you probably did or a tad higher which in fact would cause some obstruction with the top pipe and the bumper reinforcement. Since I don't ever want a problem with the front lip hitting either the bottom of the intercooler or the piping, I'm going for a tad higher mounting. It's a clean fit right now, but as I said before, I think it's "pulling" slightly and would be a better fit if I cut some of the reinforcement which I will.

I found the big trick to this path with the HRC side mount piping was when the upper I/C pipe ran right underneath the fuse box and used the 90 degree silicone angle straight down from that area. There's a nice litle removeable plastic piece that I discarded underneath the fuse box (2- 12mm bolts). After that, it was pretty much elementary. I had to cut a small hole out of the plastic splash shield too, on the driver's side where the lower pipe ran. These things were all pretty logical though.
When I take off the bumper again to cut some of the reinforcement, I'll post some pics. I know merely using words, it's hard to envision.

Polishing was done by me and Mr. Dremel. Get some polishing compound to start, and hand rub out the major stuff. Use dremel and polishing kit on the innerds. I was careful b/c there's not a lot of room to manuever. I used various little tools to straighten any bent fins. Clean it all off with some heavy water pressure. (remember, it's aluminum...no rust problems) Then I repeated this step until I had those endtanks sparkling.

Anyhow guys, this intercooler is a GREAT alternative. So far under hard boosting, it's worked flawlessly. No wonder it's so popular with turbo people. Thus far, the cost of it has been great.

$100 intercooler
$150 HRC I/C piping AND custom made piping from MWC (great deal...THANKS MAN! emoji )
$50 for 2.25" inlet/ outlet welding
$30 for 2.25" mandrel bent alumnium piping from RRE
$10 for extra ghetto plumbing couplings needed because Mickey(grneclipse) hasn't sent me mine...LOL jk emoji (don't worry man...whenever)

Feel and look with new FMIC ....PRICELESS (dumb joke mode off...sorry, felt I had to do it)

And if I ever have the need to boost amounts which exceed the usefulness of this intercooler, my options are at a maxiumum with the piping already in place. That's the real pain of an intercooler of course. Fashioning the intercooler piping to fit correctly.

I don't mean to undercut the intercoolers offered by HRC, STAR, Apex'i or GReddy, but geez...this is a really nice looking intercooler that keeps your compressed air frigid. It's all in the piping. If you can manage THAT very big obstacle, you can do this and pay less than $200 for every EXCEPT the piping. If you can get the piping for less than $250, you've done well I think. All of you know how much stage 2 upgrades cost anyways.

AS I said, this install was done during sort of an import car get-together. Todd from the other post (Buscher incident) took some pics.

I know it's always fun to look at pics...heh

Here's me and my Neon friend throwing back on my bumper. Liek I said before, it's a tight fit, so I'll be cutting some more later!

It's DONE!(for the evening) Hooray!

Hows the IC coming? did you do a little something something to it yet or you gonna leave it alone? I would say at least take the time to figure out the mounting location and prep it so it does not take any time to install, as you will need the extra time for the turbo install. emoji

Nah I'm still waiting for the turbo kit so I haven't done anything to it except relocate the mounting tab (I think you took care of the rest). I think I'll start with the stage 1, cut the intake pipe after the BOV and work from there if feasable.
