depends where you want the power. a t25 or a t28 will basically kill everything at autox because of nice low spool but a 20g or a t3/t4 will own everything at drag racing because of high end power. don't forget, building a custom kit is a PITA and i wouldn't do it unless you really know what you're doing. it's a lot easier to go out there and buy a star, hrc, or ner kit which comes with everything you need like:

-an inscruction manual (i really liked the hahn manual, i hear the star manual sucks, and i don't know anything about the ner manual)
-tech support
-a tested platform (well, the ner isn't really that well tested yet because it just recently came out, but you get the idea)

i hear that the star kit is being re-designed or something and they're not shipping. i also know that lots of people are having problems actually getting all of their parts from new edge racing...there's one thread around here with like 70 posts flaming shaun. i also hear that and hrc is taking a long time to ship (i got my system a little over a month after i sent them the check in the mail, some stuff was on backorder and i didn't actually get the downpipe until about a week after i got everything but the downpipe). building a custom kit is nice because it's usually a few hundred bucks cheaper too, and you get to choose EXACTLY what goes into your car. but you're the one that will eventually decide if it's really worth the extra hundred bucks for less headaches. i know RxR_Eclipse has a nice custom setup, you might want to check it out. anyways, sorry for the long post. i'm done now.

If you ask how to build a custom turbo kit, but sound like you haven't done much research...most people will tell you not to attempt it. I'm one of those people. I second the recomendation of reading Corky Bell's book and the archives. If you really want to do this yourself, I suggest you buy a used Stage 1 kit off of someone. It will be missing parts and you will have to fabricate stuff to make it stage 2 worthy. That way, you should save $$$ and get the joy of figuring things out yourself, busting your knuckles, driving all over the city for unknown fittings, and cursing whoever sold you the kit. I think that will save you alot of the headaches of a TRUE custom kit and will let you pick most of the components yourself.

I second Corbin on that one....If you have the money, buy a new or used kit....then put together a killer custom stage 2-3. If I would have had the money that is what I would have done.....
As far as the turbo's go...it is really up to you. The T25 and T28 really spool quickly. The T28 will flow as much as a 16G but are hella expensive. If your really interested, I may know someone who has a BBT28 brand new. Last I heard he wanted $1000 for it.
And as stated above, the T3-4 series are good turbo's, hold up verry well at the top end, where the T25 falls off.(at higher boost levels of course).

Thanks for the help what would be a good turbo for the 1/4 mile. And what is the max boost that u can run on a t 25. I'm leaning towards a t 25 bc later i could have it up graded to a t 28. But i'm just really after sometihng to get me going that will be able to be up graded I no most ppl can do a turbo kit them selves for under 1500 and it is pretty compitive. compared to other boughten kits. I'm after somthing that is at a good price but will get me some instant power. That i can later upgrade. How much horse can a t 25 handle. I also looked for that book at barnes and nobles but couldn't find it i seen it a couple months ago. But It was gone when i went back. Thansk for all ur help

It's not very competitive really...

420aVenger spent like $1800 with I *think* t3 and smic
RxR_Eclipse spent around $1500 for a t25 and no intercooler
jcurillo spent around $1500 for t3 and some sort of intercooler
I'm hoping around $1300 for 14B with smic

For $2900 with S16G or t3/t4 and FMIC its pretty decent.

The thing is we know what we want and thats how we piece it together. We get the exact fuel system we want with what turbo we want and what size piping etc...

People like Thura who are very smart build it right the first time and don't have to replace parts like most do with HRC or Star kits.

If i had the money i would probaly just go out and get a kit. And really i don't no to much about the whole turbo deal. I'm very mechcanicly inclined. I'm Just trying to get the fondamentals I wanted to rebuild my motor adn do a turbo this winter. But figure that is just a dream But would really like to do the turbo. What are the advantages between a t 25 and 14 b. T 25 will spool up faster but the 14 b will come on top end. What do u all consider top end as in top end of a 1/4 mile. I am on a semi low budget the only thing i ahve to pay for is my car payment and insurance. 230 a month. I want to get the most bang for my buck. But don't want to replace things with better things. So i will probaly go with no intercooler at frist. I can always find a good deal on turbos but and i no some one on here makes intakers for i belive 275. But where do i get good piping. Would i just go to a muffler shop of a different shop. Thanks I some day want to make a good turbo that will put a 5.0 stang down in town. And a subru wrx just bc he laughs at me when he see's me. Sorry so long

Well if your just talking QM times, you could use the bigest turbo you want! If you stage correctly you will be spooled before you leave the line. I have heard of some people using a studderbox to do this, but have never seen one myself.
The T25 is pretty useless at anything over 12-15 psi. So if you are planning on building your engine, do not get the t25. If you can find one, buy a 16G. They are a great turbo.
I don't know how efficient a 14b is at high levels but I have a friend that runs consistantly @ 23psi with his awd laser. It is damn fast on the highway! Although it seems to bog down alot from a full stop.

On the fuel system, I would go with some larger injectors, (just to be safe), the walbro fuel pump, and a SFMU unit. My cartech unit works, but, I am dreading the day it causes a lean condition.

Those are all items that you can buy and install without the turbocharger being on the car.....

Will you stop with those T-25 ?
Get a real turbo (sorry RXR) the T-25 is just a toy
Get a Garrett T-3 a nice fat one rebuilt to perfection preferably one pulled from an old Mustang or a Thunderbird

The shape of this turbo is soo perfect for our cars
It's like it has the words 420A READY casted on the turbo

well, now that you hav elisted a few turbo names, I can tell you very easily from a drag racign perspective. a t25 car will bebeaten by a 14B car. a 14B car will b beaten by a 16G car. A 16 G car will be KILLED by a 20G car. a 20G car will be HUMBLED by a to4E50+ car or FP Green equipped car. that will b beaten by a FP RED equipped car or a fp 3055 equipped car. that will be beaten by a TS04 equipped car or a FP 3065 equipped car, that will be DESTROYED by a to4R (or t66) equipped car, that will be DOMINATED by a T51R (or a t78-88 equipped car that will be beaten by a t71R equipped car. that will be beaten by a 105+mm turbo equipped car.............until you ge tup in the 2000 hp range..............what turbo to buy should NOT be the first question. your first statement should be "I have X ammount of money to spend. what is the best way to spend all of it "right now" to make my car going forward faster specifically". in which case I would say buy a used turbo kit emoji

Read this ahead of time..
I was like you before. I wanted to turbo my car ASAP. But, I jumped in too early. Now what happened?.. I have an expensive paperweight (turbo), with me, but I did not do all calculations (not just power, but financial calculations). Plan out really really ahead of time, so you don't make any mistakes. See if you have any money. Which plays a big role. And you can fabricate alot of things, but not everything. IMO about 80-90% things you get are off the shelves. Read the books. Not just once, but twice and more times, until you get it. Goto www.howstuffworks.com .. And goto how a turbo works. Learn how an engine works (not saying that you don't know how, but its better to have a fresher course). I am not telling you to buy a kit, I'm saying it would be good if you did more research (I wish I would've taken it seriously when someone told me to do some more research). With all that said...

To answer the question..

This is what I gathered from the well knowledgable people on the board..

Here is a "list" of what you may need or what you might want..

FMIC
Intercooler Piping
S-AFC
Turbo (of course emoji )
Exhaust manifold
Downpipe
Oil/Water Lines
I would suggest a new oil pan
Air Filter
Proper house fittings
Boost Guage
It would be good to upgrade your current exhaust system
You would have to retard the ignition
Good to have upgraded internals (considerably forged)
Oh yeah, a major thing..

UPGRADE YOUR FUEL!!
You would need.
New injectors
New fuel lines (nice to have braided)
New FPR

But..
You can try the Corbin 8 injector setup, which I may do soon..
Where you use you stock or blue printed injectors..
And get something small like 2XX or 3XX cc injectors..
New fuel rail
Need new fuel line to connect the fuel rails
And, an Extra Injector Controller (EIC).

NOW TALKING ABOUT THE TURBO..
To figure out which turboes can get more power, alot of people said it. It really depends on what application you are using it for. You can get a small turbo like a T25 or T3 or a K03 (like I have), it would be good for AutoXing and for 1/8 mile runs and sprints. You could get something big like a T4 or T66 for drags. Or alittle of both, one of the best, and used by many, a T3/T4 (hybrid). It uses the compressor section of a T4 and the exhaust side of a T3. You would have to check the trims too. This tells you how "big" or "small" a turbo is. Another thing.. I'm saying it would be better if you could get one in real life or at some scrap/junkyard by you. I got mines of eBay, and it's not bad. But I've heard many people getting POSs from eBay...

You can get turboes scraped off these cars..

T3s:
Nissan 300ZX (so I've heard)
Mustang SVOs
Thunderbird Turbo Coupes (85 and 86 I believe, the 87+ and 85- are NA or uses different turboes).
Merkur XR4ATi (or however its spelled).
Saab 900's Coupes and 9000's Sedans

T4s:
Nissan 300ZX (I've heard)

T25 or 14B:
2ND Generation DSMs (Eagle Talon TSi, TSi AWD, and Mitsubishi Eclipse GST and GSX).

16B (I think):
1ST Generation DSMs (I think)
Mitsubishi Starions (I think)

Triple K turboes:
Late model VW turbo cars.
Audi A6 (I think)
Audi TT (which is a single turbo)
Many Benzs but those are big Diesel turboes.
Porsches too.

You can get some turboes from Volvos, and some Nissans. Also, you can get some from some Toyotas, if you have access to those in your area.

Oh yeah..
The "Things we've seen before" section might help..
That's where they have more info on making your own kit.

~Tacoman

I hope that helped.
