#31330, "MSD DIS2 questions"

I am going to get the msd dis2 in a few weeks here. First I need to break in the engine. I do not want to get the programable computer one. When I go to order it which one do I ant to get. I also need to get the thing that tunes it relative to how much boost you are running. How exactly do you go about getting this thing running properly. How is it adjusted and tuned? Do you need to datalog the car while messing with it to see if it is pulling enough timing?

I as well as another in houston have the dis 2. However it is not really tuner friendly. I set it to retard around 2 degrees at 4500 rpm. This makes for a really strong top end but the car didnt pull as hard as it used to. I really like the car to pull hard and I put the bypass plug in. I think the msd box you need to look at is the boost timing master (BTM). Its a boost sensative rev limiting ign. box. I feel more tuning would be accomplished with this. Just my opinion. I will get this soon and if you need a dis2 bad let me know mine is just sitting here. late mike

I plan on gettign the boost timing master too. I dont think retarding the timing by rpm is very useful. Dont we want to retard timing off of boost. If you retarded it off of rpm then when your at high rpm under no boost your timing will be pulled and you dont want that.

Hey bro you are right but very rarely do i go over 4500 while not doing the boost thing. I however I really like the hard pull i alwayas used to get. The btm is the way to go (only retards under your set boost desires) I really need to get this bad but the talon is the only transportation i have right now. late mike

You could also go with the Crane system with the optional timing retard module. You can adjust the timing from inside the car with the Crane.....thats why I got mine.

yo dave,
that unit on summit's site won't work on our car. you need to use one of their dis units. I don't know if you can hook up a BTM to the standard DIS2. i know crane does have an ignition that has a boost module, but i think it is pretty expensive. that's why i got the programmable unit. i know you don't want to go this route, but it really works exceptionally.

dave if you look at the details on that unit it says it don't work on distributorless ignitions. the dis2 is only 418 i think and the map sensor is 60 and the tach adapter is like 50 bucks. install is exceptionally simple. software is super easy to use, but you do need a laptop with a serial port.
hit me up if you need any more info

I am going to go with the Dis2 Programable my self. You can fine tune with this bad boy. You can retard timing as low as 1/2 degree per pound of boost.
