I was thinking about where to put mine, and I talked to Shaun from NER, and he said it might be better to put it on the upper part of the downpipe like a few do here. I guess that's incase your #4 cylinder has really fuked up compression then it would change the temp of that cylinder's exiting exhaust gasses. Which would you all recommend? #4 or downpipe?

DEfinitely the manifold versus the DP. The readings are much more accurate and quicker to respond. There's no need to make a -200 adjustment as well to correspond with everyone else who put theirs in the manifold.

One question then. My turbo downpipe is 3", and the probe is 1 1/2" so it would be in the center of the pipe.. but my exhaust manifold is about 2" at the #4 runner, so it will be close to the opposite side of the hold drilled in the #4 runner. Would this affect my readings?

the best place to mount the egt is right before the turbo. close to the center. If you mount it right after the turbine, the temperature difference will be 150 degrees farenheight except when cruising at a high rpm not under load (i.e. 4000+ rpm)in that case, the temperature difference is 25 degrees. the downpipe location doesn't register temperature changes any slower than measuring in the manifold, as the turbine housing is usu. pretty thick, and the vast majority of heat is shot out of the downpipe instead of radiated out of the side of the turbine housing. the #4 runner is usu. the "coldest" cylinder out of the bunch, and under lean conditions, assuming proper fuel pressure, will be the "last" cylinder to go bad. cylinders 2 and 3 are usu between 50 and 75 degrees higher than cylinders 1 and 4. once again, the best place to put the sensor is directly between cyl 2 and 3 right before the turbo. trust me. I know.

Hey AvengerEST, do you mean right here?

Right where the #2 & #3 meet up at the flange? How much of a difference is there in temperature compared to having it right at the #4 runner?

Thanks, Richard (97 ESi)

Yea, I know he said that.. I was talking about the difference between #4 right next to the block, compared to between #2&3 near the manifold->turbo area.

assuming that manifold is ceramic coated, the temperature difference shoudl be about 50 or so degrees......."higher" than measuring from the #4 runner. the purpose of coating a manifold is to hold the head in to increase the flow and heat effenciency to the turbocharger. if the temperature at the inlet of the turbocharger is drasticly lower than the average temperature of the head ports, then the manifold is not really good quality at all. I have 5 egt probes one 2" from each port and one 1 inch from the turbo outlet in the downpipe. since I have the HRC log style manifold, the readings from cyl 2 and 3 are very close to what would be read in the exacty center of the manifold (maybe higher my 25 degrees maximum).
