#29154, "What does td04 turbo equate to?"

First off I know this is a DSM board, but I figure you guys are smarter than the hondaheads anyhow. so here goes

Getting a turbo kit for the Integra GSR,

and I found one off a SOHC EX

but the turbo is not the standard t3t4, it's a td04? Whwat does that equate to? 14b? or a 16g?

Also, although this is a Hon-DUH question, Hondad forums sucks ass, Would anyone here know the downside of putting a smaller turbo on such a high-revving, high compression engine.

All the local shops tell me not to put anything smaller than a 18g on my B18c, because they say that the smaller turbos would blow my engine, but they dont' give me a reason why. ANyhow, TIA

Isn't a TDO4 a 14b or is it a 13b?

I'm just curious... How would a "smaller" turbo blow your engine? I would think that if anything, it would be a "bigger" turbo that would do it. Wouldn't the amount of boost be the contributing factor, not the size of the turbo?

The TD04 is a 13g turbo. It comes stock on the wrx, and some others. You do not need a larger turbo for your application. Depending on how high your compression is though you should invest in an intercooler as well if you havent already. The reason that people are telling you to get a larger turbo is probably because at higher rpm, the larger turbo's will keep the power on more effectively than smaller ones will and deliver boost at lower temps and greater cfm's. If you do use a smaller turbo without an intercooler, at high rpms it will be delivering boost that may be too hot for a high compression engine which results in detonation. As long as you put in an intercooler and boost within that turbo's capabilities, you will be fine.

I would go withg the bigger turbo simply because you can rev high and your compression will keep you from looking like an ass off the line. If it were me I wouldn't go small I'd go big. But that thing about the size of the turbo is BS IMO but I don't know $hit about hondas. I do know that different turbos have diff power bands though so if you go small it will lessen the performance as you rev higher out of that turbo's power band. If this sounds wrong it's prolly cause I'm not going into all the detail of explaning compressor maps and all.

The TD04 is a 13g, as has been stated. It came on the automatic 1st gen DSMs.
