#28638, "Triple K Turboes"

I have a K03 turbo, and I was wondering, if I can get the compressor part of another KKK (truck) turbo. Won't this be like a T3/T4 hybrid turbo, except it will spool very very quicker than the others, and be able to take in more air?

If I can, what parts would I need?

Would I need any special tools to make the hybrid?

Thanks

~Tacoman

BTW, when I mean truck turbo, I mean any big turbo for example a diesel turbo like off a Benz 300 (SD?).

Ok dude don't take this the wrong way I'm not trying to flame you here but do you have a degree in engineering or something? Your talking about making hybrid turbos and custom 2 turbo setups by yourself. I think you may be getting in a little over your head here. Have you ever done this much custom work before? How much stuff have you fabricated on your own? I understand money is tight so your on a budget but it's really going to blow your budget if you kill your car.

Why don't you take some of those turbos that you are trying to sell
put them on ebay where you could at least make $60-75 each
And take that money to do a very SIMPLE project car, like slapping a $100 low milleage T-25 at the end of the stock manifolds

Well, I have a REAL BRAIN... and I'M not trying to offend YOU... but you honestly need to do a whole lot more research before attempting any turbo install, ESPECIALLY a custom setup. I am currently installing my custom T3 setup and I DO know what the hell I'm doing.

I'll say this:
The basic rules of thumb is that if you need to ask these kind of questions, then you should not be attemping an install at this point. You should understand EVERY aspect of how the 420A operates and how turbo systems work. I'll post some links in another thread about engines and turbo systems. Please read them.

Your comments are childish, immature, and lack direction of thought. You MUST understand that some of your questions seem outragous and your plan's not logical... and I'm not saying that to offend you, but only state the obvious. If you need any help with custom turbo chargers, engines, or nitrous... feel free to private message me or send an IM my way. And read my post.

Anyways, seriously..

I have a KKK K03 turbo, do you think I can hybrid build with a bigger KKK turbo, just like a T3/T4 is a hybrid build of a T3 and T4?

Thanks

OO.. i forgot.. do you think that it is the turbo design? Because Garrett designed there T3s and T4s alike, but KKK might have designed there's different.

OK guys, instead of argueing, why not just help him out. First off, he's not asking how to build a custom turbo kit. He's asking about making a KKK hybrid turbo.

KKK turbos come on VW's, Audi's, and Porsche's. Check out a veedub forum or something. The KKK turbos are kind of foriegn to this forum. You can call Blitz, they deal with KKK and ask them what they think.

Making a hybrid can be much harder than doing a rebuild on a turbo. Not many "special" tools are needed. Just check out a VW site and get back to me. I'd like to know.

You could likely hybrid a KO4 compressor to the K03 turbine but it would be more work than its worth. Considering they are both already smaller than a T25, both already spool quickly. The K03 is good for about 200hp/wh while the K04 is good for about 240hp/wh. externally they look identicle but the KO4 has bigger wheels. You'd be better off just using a KO4 if your determined to use a KKK turbo. The Better VW/AUdi tuners aren't using either KKK turbo because they just dont make alot of power reliably.

Oh and forget about hybriding a truck turbo. The compressor and turbine sizes have to be within reason of each other. You cant put a T25 turbine on a T4 compressor unless you want poor performance. Most diesel truck turbo's wont even physically mate to a small KKK size turbo (You can bet most race turbo's like T66 and above ect were originally designed for trucks until Turbonetics ect began using and modifying them for racing).

I don't really even know what your saying here. What directions? How did I insult you I asked you a few questions. Furthermore I don't know it all nor do I think that I do. (notice the correct usage of the word Nor) I have a real brain and the sense to know when I'm in over my head. I also have the knowledge to say that some of your ideas will not work and some of the ones that will are going to cost a lot of money if you are not doing the work yourself. That鈥檚 why I asked you how much fabrication you have done. Now once again not to be a jerk: If $50 is not in your budget for gauges, How do you expect to make a hybrid turbo and a 2 turbo set up unless your a MASTER fabricator. I fully support thinking outside the box but when you ask questions you must be prepared for the answer. Now for some more knowledge that I'm pretty sure is real.

If you have a small exhaust housing it decreases the amount of air you can push through the compressor. Once the exhaust wheel is turning as fast as it can your done. So by starting with an exhaust housing this small your only going to get a marginal gain from the hybrid turbo. In order to make real power your compressor would have to be huge. Correct me if I'm wrong here guy's but if you want quick spool you sacrifice top end power. So here is my ? to you. What kind of power goals do you have for your car? Or do you just want a cool looking set up that is a dud on the track?
P.S. sorry if this sounds condescending but it's supposed to.

My goal is going over 1000 hp emoji , but since I can't do that at the moment, I'll settle for the range between 200-300 hp for now.
Anyways, in hybrid turboes, I know the bigger wheel is used right(?), but what if use the smaller wheel?
Say you just got the housing, without the bigger turbo's cartridge. Would it do worse than before, same or better?

Thanks

If you would've read my post that I posted especially for you, then you would know the answer to this question.

>My goal is going over 1000 hp emoji , but since I can't do
>that at the moment, I'll settle for the range between
>200-300 hp for now.

To go over 1000HP, you'll need to talk to Gary at Howell Automotive. He's considering making an aluminum block that can handle that much power.

If money is an issue, which I know it is for you... and the rest of us doing custom installs... I highly recommend getting a Garrett T3 turbocharger. I picked one up for $150 in great condition on the Internet. It will do you very well. The 14b is also a very good turbo unless you're just hell-bent on using these K03 turbos. Just my 2 cents here...

Thank you for not helping be again, and only trying to discourage me.

The 1000hp was a joke, for some reason, people don't have a sense of humor.

And about the boost guage, I am trying to get all my guages at ones, I don't want guages that look different colors and by different companies.. So I'm getting a cheap one now, and then getting the "cool" ones or "whatever you wanna say about them gauges" later, and I'm going to either throw away the cheap one or sell it. So there you go for all the people saying "why would you want to do a project so expensive, you can't even afford a $50 boost guage".

And about the K03, I am deciding to keep it, and build the hybrid in the future, and please please give some useful comments instead of insults, name calling, and etc.

Thanks

Damn dude... you just don't get it! I didn't discourage you at all. I told you to look at my other post about turbos, I told you where to find info about building a 1000HP engine, and I told you my advise for building a turbo system.

Tell me this, tacoman... how was my last post discouraging, uninformative, or name calling? I did nothing but give you information and you're not grateful for that. emoji

I am grateful for all the information that everyone gives. I am happy when people say something isn't worth the money, or if it is complicated or if it won't work. BTW, look at your first post, last paragraph.

BTW, thank Dougie for finding me how I can build a 1000hp motor.

Thanks

Correct me if I'm wrong here guy's but if you want quick spool you sacrifice top end power.

With an exaust housing as small as the one your talking about you would have to have a compressor wheel the size of a radiator fan to get your HP figure. Not literaly but it would have to be huge. So what I'm saying is if you use the K03 turbo it will limit your HP output regardless of what hybrid setup you are able to come up with. The exaust side can only spin so fast let's just say 11,000 RPM ok. The exhaust flow spins a turbine witch can only spin as fast as the air will push it. (fins on wheel) Now that means that the compressor side can only spin to the same 11,000 RPM. So therefore the amount of air you can compress at that RPM is dependant on your compressor wheel size. So at that 11,000 RPM in order to get the same HP as a bigger exaust housing your compressor wheel has to get bigger. I hope this helps you.

So I would need the compressor housing AND the bigger compressor wheel right? I always thought that the smaller exhaust part is better, because air has no-where to go because of the smaller area, so you would get more exhaust pressure, as compared to a big one, which has a large exhaust part (where the exhaust is more free, but still gets pushed).

Do I need the cartridge?

Thanks

KKK turbos are probably the smallest turbos out there. I have driven a 2002 1.8T and you cant even hear the turbo spooling. And you do not feel any type of turbo power. It spools so fast that it feels N/A. IMO making a KKK custom turbo kit is a waste of time. You wont even get 14's with it. Just save some money and get a satge 1 kit used. Thats what I did. I only paid $1600 for my kit and that was with install help included.

Help that answers your question.

Tacoman, what's so special about your K03? I'm not trying to flame you or anything but there are other, more practical options out there. What about all those turbos that you havve for sale?

What if you rebuild on of them, have it ported and clipped, and be done with it. Making a hybrid KKK is cool, but it's not something that can just be thrown together. Turbonetics took hundreds of man hours in R&D to get things right with there hybrids.

I don't think anyone here is discouraging you, just trying to open your eyes to other, simpler options. Believe me, if your trying to make a custom twin set up we're behind you all the way. We just want to help that's all.

Because I got this for a real good price. And also the K03 has quick spool up. I would get some of the other turboes, but I will only get a deal if there is a group buy. So I hope some other people would follow. By the way, other people would get a good deal too, depends on the volume of people getting it..

Thanks

Ok tacoman I want you to read this whole statement:

If you have a small exhaust housing it decreases the amount of air you can push through the compressor. Once the exhaust wheel is turning as fast as it can your done. So by starting with an exhaust housing this small your only going to get a marginal gain from the hybrid turbo. In order to make real power your compressor would have to be huge. Correct me if I'm wrong here guy's but if you want quick spool you sacrifice top end power.

I don't think you understand what I am saying here. Read the whole thing very carefully and focus on the part about exaust housings and compressor wheels. Your HP figures will not be met with that turbo period end of discussion. Even if you bolted a T4 compressor on it it would not do a damn thing for you.
