#28616, "What do these Compression Test results mean????"

I had my compression tested on a 98 420A w/ 74K and it read:
185 185 175 200 DRY and then after that, we tested the lowest cyl (175) on a wet test and it went all the way to 245!! What does this mean?? Thanks fellas!!

Your compression is fine. 175 is not a horribly low number.

I agree with you that 175 is not a horribly low number, and I wouldn't have been that concerned if all the cyl's were right around 175 but there's more than a 10-15 psi diff between cyl 3 and 4 and that's what i'm worried about, and the fact that the wet test had a 70 psi difference from the dry. What does this mean?

wet tests increase compression numbers. If it increases a bad cylinder, does it not stand to reason it would increase a good cylinder?

However, with a number that high (a 70psi jump) i think the test is faulty, or the initial test was incorrect.

10-15psi difference is of no consequence. As long as it is not 10-15% higher or lower, i would not worry.

Thanks for the help man, I have another question though, Like 1 day after this compression test I threw a Rod Bearing in Cyl #4, Is this going to be related to my compression in any way? Such as you said that the test could have been faulty, Can i redo the compression test now that i have a thrown rod bearing and still get accurate numbers? Thanks!

If you've spun a rod bearing, i wouldn't turn the motor over at all until you get the damage repaired, lest you bugger it up even more.
