#26756, "What are the symptoms of a bad head gasket?"
I've been reading the board for the last couple hours and the only thing I've found is oil on the tranny.
Well on a recent road trip I noticed my oil pressure gauge was low, checked the oil and ended up adding 3 quarts. There's oil all over the bottom of the engine. Would this be the result of a bad head gasket? or maybe a oil pan gasket?
I'm 300 miles from home, so I can't really check much. I want to drive it home this weekend, but I'd like to know what I'm dealing with.

It could be a number of things. You should trace the oil to the highest point on the engine. If the highest point is the head then odds are the headgasket is yer problem. If oil is higher than that, then you probably have a leaky valve cover. If oil is only below the oil pan gasket, then you probably just need to replace that Other symptoms of a bad head gasket include: mixing of oil/coolant, loss of coolant, puffs of air coming out of the dipstick while car idles, white or blue exhaust smoke (loss of coolant or oil).
