Ok, I have a 99 automatic eclipse with 56k miles on it and I have a star stage two. What would I have to do to the engine so that it could manage 18psi?

rebuild the bottom end.
get larger injectors, or more injectors.
afc or some other type of fuel control.
and spend time on a dyno tuning it

Let's not forget the ignition with timing retard capability. If you plan on running 18 psi, I would stay away from the safc or afc. I would either go with corbin's setup with 8 injectors (the most cost efficient way in my opinion and there is a group buy on the EIC right now) or go with a DFI or Haltech system. The safc is really only good for about 15 psi, but some have pushed the limits...

With some 550's and the s-afc you can run 26 psi. I know someone who is doing it right now.

From what I understand, an SAFC with 440's is good for about 15 psi at normal fuel pressures. I have heard of people who run 550's with it, but since the SAFC can't quite compensate for that large of injectors at idle, it runs too rich from idle to 0 vac and it also has trouble idleing. This results in more frequently fouled plugs/O2 Sensors. If I am wrong about this pls feel free to correct me so I dont give the wrong info to someone.

It is not so much that the 550's are not enough fuel to push a S16G but more so the 550's are a problem for the S-AFC. It is not that it can not run them, but you would really be pushing the S-AFC hard and it is too far one dimensional to do it cleanly. This is a problem specific to our cars and the small stock injector size when using the S-AFC. Obviously 50% of a 440 is a lot more than 50% of a 235. More power can be gained simply by using a more advanced method. No one mentioned what turbo so I will assume S16G because you will probably need a hell of a lot more to run the T3/T4 setup with the star kit and I would want more for a S20G as well. Remember, injector duty cycle, sizing, and fuel pressure effect timing and detonation (heat). You run too high of any of those and then you can begin to see problems. That being said, people HAVE run 440's with an AFC and 18psi, me being one of them. I did it on smaller injectors for kicks by using a high fuel pressure with 36lb/hr injectors. Do I recommend it? No. Has it, can it, and is it being done? Yes.

Also, I am not sure why everyone has made 18psi a magical number. I guess because that is where some of us have pushed and fixated it. I like to think that I can push that number more and then people will begin asking what do I have to do to run 20psi? emoji

The real answer to any of these questions of course is learn what the hell you are doing. It is rude, but if you have to ask you should not consider running so much boost. This is the right place to ask, but I would also recommend doing a lot more reading than what you just learn here. This is the internet. People mostly just repeat what they hear and not what they have done. Find some people you would consider mechanically and turbo knowledgable in real life and start your process of osmosis and brain drain. emoji

Oh, and with this all being said, I am in fact going for a 50lb/hr saturated setup (525cc), but I am only going to be using a 1:1 regulator and am using the E-Manage. This means my fuel pressure will not be too high. I am fixating on staying with the S16G and feel I will be perfectly fine. It is a good street turbo and perfect for what I want. When I need more power, I intend on sorting out my nitrous as a wet shot to make the difference, but only on the track and on race gas.

you just said you want to run 18 psi to make up for turbo lag.......you "completely" lost me there. what turbo are you running that you would worry about lag? Also, lag is considered the time it takes for a turbocharger to reach full spool (at whatever boost level you set it at). Hince more boost means longer to get where you want to be, hince more lag. do you see how I am lost? running more boost has no positive affect on turbo lag.

I must second what Murix said. READ!!!!!!!!!!!! and go one step at a time. IF you go all out you may find out things you didn't really want to know, or you may spend more than you are willing to pay.

well if you're automatic you really shouldn't worry about lag. You can build boost off the line by power braking. I think the stall in the stock autos are only like 2200rpm or something. Try buying a higher stall, maybe 2800-3000which is still streetable. Now, no more turbo lag at the track.

Auto helps lag yes, but it hurts the rev limit significantly. If you get a turbo that does not make power until late in the game you will have a very narrow power band.

i ran 20psi on 440's and SAFC. BUT, i used race gas with it. and also tuned the timing so i wasnt advancing through the roof. its all about TUNEING! you cant just throw stuff in there and expect them to magically work like most people do. that kind of thinking is what blows motors.
