#25187, "How to tell if your wastegate is Open?"

How can I tell if my External Wastegate (Delta) is open. I get a slow spool up and below 3k my car feels slow as balls. How do I op check it after I take it off? THank

If your wastegate pipe is not welded to the downpipe, when your car is running on idle and you put your hands on the openning of that pipe you won't feel any exhaust gases. That's how you would know that the wastegate is close. It only open's up when the you hit the desire boost i.e. 7psi or something.

Well if you have a dumped wastegate and you cant hear it open up something is wrong. Really wrong, it should be loud as shit and send back some exhaust fumes to the cab. If it isnt opening up you might have too big of a spring in there and your not making enough ass to open it up. One other thing may be the way its hooked up. HKS sites are pretty good for diagrams on hookups with boost controllers. late mike

Well I have my WG plumbed back into the downpipe so I can't hear or feel it. When I take it off is there some way I can tell if it functions correctly. Thanks

Exactly if you are building boost quickly once past the threshhold rpm where it kicks in strong and aren't overboosting then it must be opening properly. its the only thing keeping boost from skyrocketing. If its stuck open you wont achieve any boost. If your car is performing as it should from 3500rpms up then its not the wastegate, its the Star turbo (even if it is ballbearing). its suppose to be as slow as balls below 3000rpms. It should feel just like stock below 3000rpms. If you didn't have the ballbearing you'd really be complaining. Mine didn't kick in strong until 3500rpms. you just dont have enough exhaust energy to spool quickly below that and that 2 or so lbs of boost down there is offset by the restrictive nature of the turbine (which is why that 2lbs feels just like normal aspiration).
