Well, I was looking closely at some pictures of some turbo manifolds, especially for our 420A..
And then I noticed, its just many smaller pipes connecting together...
It looks like some T pipes, and elbow pipes... Is it more than it seems to be? I mean, it looks very very simple to make, and I dont want to pay the $150+ they are charging...
Also, does anyone know what grade of pipping would be able to withstand the hot exaust gases?
Also, does anyone know where I can get mandrel bent turbo headers for a T3?

unless it is cast iron like the Star they are all made like that

Yupe very simple, when you know how to do high-pressure welding, drawing and doing a manifold flange on a digital milling machine, have a mig welder, industrial metal grinder, industrial press drill and an industrial chop saw near you it is so simple

Manifold cost money to do right there is nothing simple in that, they are just looking simple
Hahn's are now selling a third generation manifold with their turbokit
And the manifold i'm selling on a custom basis with my partner Marc are the second generation of our own design, well second 1/2 actually
since the first was 1/2 our and 1/2 bad manifold kit that I bought when nothing else was available 1 year ago

i have seen a few peoples over here lately thinking that a few hundreds $ are a lot to pay for a manifold, it's like they don't realised that the manifold is the second most important part of a turbosystem, just after choosing the turbocharger size for your car

They are forgetting that it is worthless to have an engine eat more fuel and air if the engine is wearing a, let say, ... buttplug ... (ok I don't know if there's a automatic censorship system on this board but I'm tired and I feel very funny tonight)

You could flip over the manifold, do some cutting, porting and weld in back together. But, it probably won’t turn out anywhere near as good as a HRC manifold.

Alain's manifolds are of excelent quality (in fact alot of interest has been mention for him to make some that will work with the HRC kit cause thier older manifolds are crap) Also the time and effort to make one of these manifolds is extensive! Buying one from him is getting off cheap! I can pretty much garente that your first attemt at a "custom" manifold will proboly fail. O perhaps you could call some place like South Florida Performance and have them make you one for $550! No joke the guy said he will now make them (one month to finish) for $550 + shipping!
My recomendation would be to either :
A: buy a HRC or Starr turbo kit
B: buy one of Alain's Manifolds for a 14b, and do a custom kit.

Let me clarify my statement. I wasn’t talking about Alain's manifolds. I was talking about making a manifold yourself with no experience. I hope no one took my statement the wrong away.

tacoman if you are complaining about 150 bucks please DO NOT make a custom turbo kit for yourself, the manifold is the cheapest thing you can buy

if you ask me the only reason to make a custom kit is if you already know what you are doing and the hrc/star kits dont fit your needs, you will end up spending approx the same amount building your own as you would buying a premade kit from HRC.

I will not fit we have the starter on one side, the A/C compressor on the other side and the power steering pump also, we tried last year even a small turbo like the 13G was a pain in the ass

This guy I know made a custom turbo manifold for his for civic. I don’t know what tools he has, but he made it in his garage. He showed it to me install on his car. It looks pretty strong.

I know a guy who made a complete intake manifold and plenum with dual Weber carburators for his VW Golf only by using a hacksaw and a drill and he paid someone to weld it for him
it took him over 100 hours to do
anything is doable

But many times it is just not worth it to reinvent the wheel
I don't like the star manifold because of the external wastegate
Last year I started to save money for an iron cast manifold from a website that disseared after a few weeks, they were asking something like $550 for a 420a manifold, internal wastegate for garrett t3

After that several messages telling that HRC manifolds were selling for $299, just to learn that this is the price for the upragded 4g63 manifold and they were still not selling the 420a without a kit
If they did I would have been the first one to get one instead of having to do one for myself
And since I had to pay almost the same price for 1 manifold flange or a batch of 5 it turned into a very part time business mostly by accident

The start of this thread was someone thinking that it is easy, cost effcient and simple to do, not that it's undoable

I know that some peoples think of my manifolds as a piece of junk, to be honest I don't care anymore, they could think what they want while driving their HRC or Star kit I don't even think now they would have the knowledge to built a turbo car from ground zero by themselves

Weird that he heard that since the first completed car with my manifolds is 420avenger and he bought his manifold at Carlisles may 2002
Matt's car is pushing 10 psi at 3000 rpm with a turbo practically as big as the one from Star and while keeping the stock downpipe intact, so probably that my turbular low restriction design is for something in that

Peoples are asking for my manifolds because there isn't not much choices for the Do It Yourself guy
If you want to do one youself go ahead, if you want to mass produce one go ahead too

Right now I'm trying to make a deal with a local foundry for an hybrid manifold that will be the same CNC manifold flange with a cast stainless steel pipping in 2 pieces welded back together
If that goes allright they will only come with 1 flange for the garrett T3 and nothing else no more custom ones and expect the price to go up but they should also come in 1/2 stage 1 kit meaning manifold new turbocharger, downpipe adapter, oil lines and coolant lines

No, his wasn’t. He was asking if he could make one for under 150. With a modified cast manifold, if you have the tools, make it for almost nothing. All it takes is a lot of time. Even if you do the porting, and cutting, and have someone weld an adapter and other things, it still would be under 150 if you got the still and knowledge.

Again, I never said your manifolds were junk. I never seen one, never the less heard of them before. That true most people would not have the knowledge to built a turbo system. But, How can they learn if they never try? It seems like to me that you are too sensitive and defensive on your product. If you are doing this because you are trying to protect your “part time business” is be on me. You need to chill out, if your product is as good as you and RxR said that it is, it will speak for itself. Hell, you should be happy people are talking about it.

Personal? Your the one trying to make it personal. Again, I didn’t attack your product. No one wants to mass produce manifolds. It seems like you are trying to prevent people from going in to your same line of business. I never said I wanted to mass produce anything. Believe me your business is safe from me. BTW, how do you “barely” quote the price? Either you do or you don’t, one or the other. If you ask me there is nothing wrong with promoting you product. Maybe more people can hear about it for you throw a hissy fit on some unexpecting 2gnter.
