#23635, "Tons of Pics of My Custom Turbo Setup"

Well I don't really want to do all the image tags over so I'm going to paste my post from ASOG...

Well after a lot of planning, work, frustration, money, and a whole lot of swearing, I'm finally done. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be but I finished it BY MYSELF. Labor wise that is. But I do have to thank Alain and Adam (jadedsilver) for helping me by answering my questions. Also Alain made the manifold for me and Adam made me a piece for my IC piping which w/ out that I'd still not be done. So big thanks to them. I also want to thank anyone else who answered any questions. The list is long and I don't want to leave anyone off but you know who you are… Well for being a pretty big turbo (t3 AR .63 exhaust and .60 intake) it does pretty good. Starts building boost at ~2800, hits 5 psi at ~4K, and sticks 7 psi from ~4.5K to redline. It’s a hell of a lot more fun now. Car actually has balls. First gear tacks almost immediately and second pulls like a SOB. And the BOV IS really f-ing loud!!! I love it. In 2nd gear at WOT I’m getting about .96 Volts. EGT’s never go above 1400. Haven't done any 3rd or 4th pulls yet while monitoring. I’m using the 2.72 disk in the SFMU w/ 315cc injectors and it seems like a good choice. I pulled out of Lowes in first and hammered it. Shifted to second and bam, no power and tranny “fell” into gear real easy. I almost shit my pants. Floored it and hear my intake roar. Just blew off the IC pipe. So that’s my first big scare averted Oh and the most important part!!! This is basically a stage 2 w/ upgraded injectors, all gauges, SFMU, and turbo timer. The total price INSTALLED and running was right under $2000. Yes it was a PITA but I’d have at least $3300 in it if I bought a kit. So it was worth it for my poor ass emoji Anyway enough rambling, here are the pics. If you have ANY questions or comments about this crap please post or e-mail me anytime.

Flexible piping for the pressurized pipes? Where did you get pipe that you could clamp onto without crushing it? I've seen some flexible exhaust pipe that looked like that, but I wouldn't think it could withstand clamping without reinforcement. Is that you're permanent solution, or are you going to get some solid pipe bent up? Aside from that, it looks like a very clean install. Looks like you thought of all the detail necessary to give you a reliable kit. Might want to make a heat sheil or something for the downpipe. The upper radiator hose is pretty vulnerable to heat. What is the big brass looking thing in the downpipe?

Yeah I'm not quite finished. I'm going to be wrapping a bunch of stuff w/ heat wrap when I get paid again. The brass thing is a plug for where the factory 02 sensor is on the T-Bird (temporary solution till I get something prettier, 18mm plugs are hard to find) I torqued the clamps down VERY hard on the couplers holding that pipe and then dissasembled it and the pipe was in perfect shape. I thought the same thing when my dad suggested flex pipe but it is very strong. Plus I only have to use 3 couplers in the whole system.

Catch can is from Jegs. $45. BTW the TB coupler has been replaced w/ a much harder rubber coupler because the one in the pic was leaking. I don't know about the BOV. I assume and hope it's ok there.

very interesting good thing you put that heatblanket on the starter hehe. Where's teh battery in the trunk? Very ineresting intake piping ya go there and interesting what you did to the ECU. I would get some kind of heat blanket for the water hose as well looks like your downpipe is pretty close to it. Cool 2800 spool up, is that full boost or when it starts boosting? Mine is about that 3k spool and 4k full. Good job looks very stock too.

props to you for doing a custom job all by yourself too emoji

Thanks for the props. Like I said I'll be doing a lot of heat tape covering the end of this week. The battery is in the trunk. Good thing too cause my ECU and SFMU both needed a home. And it took a while to find a good place for the ECU. Fits perfect though. Oh and full spool is a little over 4K. I think I have a small leak somewhere still.

Ive seen some tuff flex piping at Trak Auto before thats hard as hell to bend (no way of doing at 90 degree angle) but it was strong enough to withstand a clamp. He could have used that and had 90 degree rubber/silicon fitting for hard angles. It doesnt look like any of the piping is bent to much. Just a thought.

You live in Grandville Ohio. I live in Westerville. That is cool. I am doing a custom setup on my GS. We have meets here in Columbus every month for Columbus DSM. You should come by some time. You could check out Kon's GS. He has a Hahn kit with a full rebuilt engine boosting 15psi. Check us out on the web. www.columbusdsm.com

The IC piping doesn't have any hard bends. That's why the ECU was replaced because I couldn't get the pipe to bend through the hole where the stock airbox was. And to the person that asked. The BOV like it's name states IS really f-ing loud emoji And I'll definately check out that site. I'd like to meet up w/ you guys sometime. Would should take a trip to National Trails. It's only like $7 to race all night on Wednesday and Friday.

I got mine at frey racing for like 20-25 bux somewhere around there. It's a blanket that you wrap around it and secure it with metal ties.

Matt, nice job with the custom setup. I bet it feels real good to know that you did the work yourself. Hopefully, I get to see your car either at a Columbus DSM meet or at National Trails.
