Well, when the engine is cold (car been sitting overngiht) and you start her up, does your turbo make like a ticking sound??? Mine does, but the ticking dies down once the car warms up. Just wondering!!! Thanks.

Same thing here. Kinda weird...like a baseball card in your bicycle tire spokes. Of course, I never boost until the car is warmed up.

Yea, I guess that's how the sound is. I spoke to Murix on AIM, and he wasn't sure. He said it might be due to lack of lubrication during initial startup. Then once oil starts to lubricate, it dies down. There is still a super tiny little bit of ticking once warmed up, but a lot quieter after the startup. I don't hear the ticking though once I undergo boost!!!!!

Re-torque all your exhaust manifold bolts. They come loose just from normal use. I had a BIG leak for a long time due to stripped bolts that fried my exh. gasket and warped the manifold. Now running TTI copper gasket and these neat exhaust studs from RRE. You should be able to feel around the manifold for air leaks puffing out before the car is warmed up.

Thanks for the replies guys. Any other HRC peeps out there. I thought I could at least hear the turbo whine a little, but I guess thats how the HRC kit is setup. Oh yeah, won't an exhaust leak get louder as your RPM's get higher. Like I said, all I hear is the wastegate start opening once it hit atmospheric pressure (0 psi) and up!!!!!!!!

On mine, the leak would go quiet at anything above ~2k rpm, presumably because there was more pressure/flow past the leaking gasket. Also, the noise stops within 30 seconds or so because the manifold heats up quick, the metal expands, closing the gap.

Ya, the 16G internal wastgate is quiet. A GoodThing for sleepers.

Hmmm, I've not noticed that my turbo makes that sound. I kinda think that there's a possible manifold leak, or the lower HRC downpipe is backing out a little. I've done everything to keep it tight, but it just keeps backing out. I would notice a sssss sound when I accelerate. Of course, it's also the turbo spooling up. I think at start up, there's not enough oil into the turbo, which could give off that slight ticking sound, and an exhaust leak would probably amplify that a little.

mines loud as hell when i go into boost. its louder than the exhuast.

the other day i was playing with a GS, and flooried it past him, at the next light he was like "damn, what turbo do you have? its loud as hell"

Well, it turned out to be 2 loose bolts on the lower part of the manifold, between exhaust ports 3 and 4. I felt a lotta air coming out of there during the initial startup, so I tightened them down the next chance I had. Well, there is no more ticking now, it turned out to be just an exhaust leak and not the turbo......whew!!!! The car feels so much better now (a lot more responsive), and I can ACTUALLY hit 5 psi. I'll check again tommorrow. My vacuum at idle is at 17 now, instead of 15. Man, it's hard to believe that such a little exhaust leak can change a car's performance. For me, it was actually a night and day difference.
