#2261, "Ball Bearing 16G?!?! - HRC?"

I would like some information on your BB 16G. I have always prfered the Mitsu Turbos but didn't know they were available in BB except for BB Frankensteins (TOO big for my taste). Anyway I would inquire about your more powerful 20G BB but I don't think I could afford that:) Any info would be great on you BB 16G.

Thanx...

Mitsubishi not only has ceramic coated turbos, but also Titanium turbos. Some of these come stock on EVOs.

However nice some of this stuff may sound, the performance increase is probably not worth the extra $$$$.

As far as DSMs and turbos are concerned the Super 16G is already considered quite a beast for a street car.

As for ball-bearing turbos, I have heard that they have a much shorter life..(i.e. they have to be rebuilt more often than "regular" turbos).

Is that really true that ball bearing turbos will not outlast other turbos? That's kinda discouraging because I ordered one. Anyway I heard it supposedly last longer because that's just how good bearings are. What do they use in a normal turbo, bushings? For 600 more than a non-ball bearing it better last the life of the car hehe...

The frankenstien is half mitsu and half garett. I belive it uses the mitsu wheel and garett housing (or vise versa) hence frankemstein.

I was almost 40yrs old by the time it came to full boost, they are like FOREVER to spool(I've driven 2 - Frank1 and Frank4) and I don't think worth it, but MAAANNN could you imagine a BB 16G, I didn't think they existed, but that's THE turbo I want!! RRE said they'd build me a custom manny for under 5 bills.

A lot of people seem to know they weren't ever available

With that said, MR. Hahn I'll be waitin emoji

Uhh...

Ditto that. I will go to a S20G if I can get it in BB! I assume, based on the standard diff's between most bb's to standard, the bb would spool equivalent to my S16G and make the top end of a S20G. First I have heard of this outside of what comes on EVO. Hmm.....

Here's the information:

Ball bearing option on new 16G and 20G turbos costs $775.

To convert an existing unit (already in service) to ball bearing may be a bit more expensive, depending upon internal condition and additional parts required.

how much would it cost to swap out my new S20G core with the ball bearing. my turbo has never had oil or water run through it (of course), and it has never been used. I would like to keep the housing 'though (becasue the exhaust side is ceramic coated, and the intake side is polished and powder coated. You can e-mail me if you choose

Armond, hows it goin?

You would pay the standard $775, since yours is still new. It will be a direct exchange, and you can keep your existing turbine and comp housings. Just send us the centersection (also called cartridge or CHRA) and we will take it from there!

Thansks Bill,

When you choose to get an upgrade like that, does your current S-16g get reconditioned and so forth?

Also, I don't know a whole lot about BB turbos. Can you give a little description on maybe some of their advantage and disadvantages (specific to your own Super turbos of course)?

Thanks a lot!

I am also looking at doing the same thing as Jason would be, upgrading my current S16G to a S20G BB. Man, this really gets ideas spinning inmy head. For a little more than I would have spent on NOS, I would rather go with a larger faster spooling turbo.

Oh Jason, that is what I would see as the greatest benefit. A BB turbo will produce less friction thus being able to spool up much quicker and from what I have seen from other BB setups, provide more mid range than a similar conventional setup. The big deal here is you can use a larger turbo with similar lag to a smaller version. What I am hoping on is that a S20G BB would spool as quickly as a standard S16G but provide some really serious top end. Is this what I would be looking at Bill? Is this going to be an option before the shootout? Now I have to go rework my budget again....

Budget!!!! Yea right, I had to throw that out the window a couple thousand of dollars ago. Now with the cost of my motor rebuild, I am begaining to think a budget for me is a joke emoji
I have had my car for 18 months now and have spent 5,890.00 in repairs and upgrades, and still have another $2,000- $3,000 to go with the bottom end. Good news is my car should be done and I should start breaking it in on the 23rd of this month. emoji

Murix:

I do not have enough data yet to say positively that a BB S20G would spool just as quickly as a non-BB S16G, but I feel it is likely. The standard S20G's really spool up pretty quick anyway, so the BB could make the difference.

Jason,

Yes, if we do the conversion to a turbo that has been in service, we will recondition as needed. If the unit is in good shape, this will not add much at all to the cost. Total cost cannot be determined until we examine your unit, though >

Advantages would include quicker spool up and greater durability. Now, we really do not have any issues with durability on the standard bearing turbos, so this aspect is hard to sell. It is certain, though, that a severe situation of overspeed or excessive thrust which would hurt a standard bearing turbo would be much less likely to hurt a ball bearing unit. In this respect, the BB setup would be better for high boost appl;ications (20+ PSI).

Budget did you guys say? Try this: I have spent MORE on my car
than I have spent on Buying It!!!!!!

As for BB Turbos... Are you guys sure that a BBS20G spools as fast a "standard" S16G???? How much d'ya think a S16G to a BBS20G would run (same question as Chris-Murix)????

You guys are too much. The budget I refer to is for everything else I want to do, not the car. Hehe. I think if I had a budget for my car, it dissapeared a long time ago. I never add up my costs in fear of seeing what I have really spent.

Hey Guy, no one really said the BB 20G would spool as quick, but that is what I am hoping for. Essentially to get 15psi around 3500rpm would make me happy. Most BB turbos I have compared spool up around 500rpm quicker to a comparable non BB unit and that really would put the S20G BB in the range I am looking at, but have a much more efficient top end. Makes it real tempting doesn't it?
