I hear everyone >talking about how bigger turbo's have more lag, but what >exactly does that mean?
"Lag" is the time waiting before your turbo "kicks in" with power. For example, I will apply throttle to my car, and given the size of the turbo, gear, RPM, and throttle pressure, I will have to wait a differing amount of time before the turbo power kicks in. But still, the amount spent between waiting for the power, and the "spooling up", still delivers more power than mere n/a power. Any turbo that you have to wait for the power, will be worth the wait. A stock T-25 has no lag time though, meaning that, when you apply the throttle, the turbo power comes as immediate as n/a power. It's pretty nice. Downside is that, the turbo starts running out of power at higher rpm's.
I know that running lower >compression(8.5:1) the engine will be slower until it builds >full boost, but what about if i go to 10.5:1?
Slightly less lag, I'm sure, but I doubt a very appreciable amount (you probably wouldn't even notice the difference) when you weigh the costs and risks. Remember, every full compression point is worth approximately 4% more power. That's not a lot, IMO. 4% of 140HP is about 5.6 HP. One point of boost, generally speaking from turbo to turbo, is about 10 HP. With each compression point you raise, you have that much less safety (to avoid engine detonation) for every pound of boost more you wish to run. Here is my take, would you rather have a car with a 10.5 CR and run 10-12 lbs. of boost, OR would you prefer 8.5 CR running 17-20 lbs. of boost? Just remember which points turn in more HP and torque, when considering CR vs. boost. This is just my opinion though. If I were building an all out race car, using primarily ONLY race gas and having dyno's available with wideband O2 sensors for tuning before every competition, then scraping every compression point you can WITH high boost would definitely be in your interests. However, I doubt most people have those sorts of resources.

You are correct. It shall, but you will never really be noticing that n/a stock HP anymore. It difficult to realize your n/a HP anymore without boosting. The turbo boost becomes so intertwined with your car's performance and power characteristics, distinguishing one from the other, is close to impossible. Don't let terms such as "lag" misinterpret the absolute gain of HP throughout your entire powerband. Remember, even "lag-time" produces more HP at the same rpm than would your car running only n/a. During the onset of full boost, your manifold is receiving much more air with rising boost than it would merely n/a. Custom kits are nice, IF you're qualified. But typically, if you break down the kit prices, there isn't a whole lot of money you'll be able to save by going al la carte. Really, the only money to be saved would be found if you decided to go with a "cheap" turbo. And if that's the case, then maybe trading your car in for a turbo model WOULD be more appropriate. Switching from a cheaper turbo to a more expensive turbo isn't as easy as it sounds as well. Especially for having a turbo setup that's more or less, custom and without any specific aftermarket support.

You've read my above advice. My last piece of advice is not to go into debt with car stuff. Remember, this is all just fun really. Most people own cars for only 5-7 years or so, and certainly not any longer than 10 years in most cases. I hate to see young guys ruin their finances through racking up credit card debt on toys. Speaking for myself, I upgrade relatively slowly, because I only use cash on mods. Moreover, I only use extra cash that isn't going to other more important things. Spend wisely.
