i was just talking to chad hoover (he owns a 97 GSX), he works at Fox Marketing up in pennsylvania. he said they are working with nitrous works to release a new nitrous kit that is set up only to spray the intercooler with nitrous. so i asked him if they really thought the gains would be significant, so he told me...they dyno'ed it on a 12.9 second civic and gained 49HP at the wheels!!! now considering this civic is already set up for max power, 49HP is an even more ridiculous figure than it seems, who knows what kind of gains a mildly modded Turbo NA would see. this was also on the dyno in a shop, so the gains would also be bigger on a moving car in hot weather. he said it was essentially a purge kit spraying on the FMIC through a spray bar rather than a single valve. anyone wanna be a 420A guinea pig for this next time you get dyno'ed and can get at a bottle of juice before the dyno run? http://www.geocities.com/blue2gnt blue2gnt@hotmail.com AOL IM - ThreeRedDiamonds

I think I could convert my kit to do that for about $20. I think the practice is pretty old but no one has produced a kit specifically for intercooling. They should produce a conversion kit also (or just different size bar sprayers that mounts to the intercooler). I guess spraying outside the engine is safer than inside and easier too.

I've got my kit in and everything! Tomorrow I'm going to be purging on the intercooler. I've been playing with the idea for 7-8 months but just haven't got around to finishing it. tomorrow we shall see Mine is't anything fancy, just a powershot solenoids and a 1/4" stainless line with micro drilled holes in it. I've only got 3 holes in it right now (trying to save nitrous) but I'll add them as I need to.

The only otyher thing to worry about it setting up your fuel system be able to handle that extra dense air. You will likely need to run rich all the time and tune it under the spray bar for optimal power. Oh, I also have mine setup to a purge button/microswitch combo. That way I can fog the intercooler while I'm staging Hopefully no NOS gets sucked into the intake and makes my engine go kablooee

hmmm...can you say accelerant? NO SMOKING, OXYGEN IN USE!
Purging nitrous into the open air is pretty safe, but I don't feel quite safe about introducing such an accelerant into the engine compartment. Track tech personnel frown upon this practice, and it is illegal in some racing organizations. Besides: at $4 a pound, you'll get more for your money if you just spray it (and the corresponding extra fuel) into the engine!

okay think of it this way, spraying 50 shots into the motor will give you 50hp, spraying the same amount on the IC might give you 10hp MAX, not even that I think. plus refilling the bottle is just hella $$$$.

Since a 10 degree drop in air temp gives a 1% gain in hp (might be off a few deg) I'm wondering exactly how much hp this engine they tested had and what kind of intercooler they were running (and its efficiency or lack of). On a 200hp engine dropping the intake temp a whole freaking 100 deg will only give 20hp. Nitrous sprayed into the engine reduces temps approx 65 deg. Also I hear the effects of an intercooler are different on a standing dyno than while the car is actually in motion. So nitrous on the intercooler would have an even bigger effect stanfing still on a dyno than actual driving.

why not spray CO2 instead of nitrous? It's still pretty f'n cold...i think it is cheaper...anywhere that sells paintball shit can fill bottles..and would be a hell of a lot safer...
just get everything so that your motor is not sucking that c02 into the intake. like for example, make some ductwork around the intercooler to blow the gases under the car, or make a cold air pipe for your turbo inlet. I have seriously thought about toying with this idea before, but there are better things to spend my time on, like figuring out how to get more air and fuel into my motor, the best way of making more power.

I would have to disagree on that one. A colder air charge will not make a turbo spool faster. Spraying NOS into the intake will actually make the turbo spool very fast. This is what people usually do when drag racing (squeeze in 1st. gear).
A simler idea would be just to install a "water-jet" instead of a nitrous jet. That way its way more cost effective, and it will be very effective. What you can do is install a "throttle-activated-switch" and that will activate your water jet only at full throttle, causing a nice cool mist of water to hit your intercooler..

I mean bear with me a second.....
NOS is safe from 2500-3000RPM onwards right? First, isn't your turbo already active by 3000rpm?
Second, Is it really worth a $500 system to risk your engine by squirting NOS in 1st gear at 1500-2000rpm to hit maximum boost by 2500rpm...heck all of that happens in a split second anyway.
And third, once you're past 1st gear, and shifting gears hard, you have no problems with boost. Its there instantly. And if you want a sudden kick while crusing, then downshift!
One more problem with a really POWERFUL launch... Wheelspin... We actually really need that slower launch.
Here's My experience: At 10psi, launching at 2000rpm to not stall, I actually successfully spin my tires through 1st, 2nd and half of 3rd gear.
Mind you I still got very fast 2.1 60ft times (Z-rated Street tires on 17" rims), but if I could stop the wheelspin then I could severly cut down my 60ft time and net a much faster 1/4 mile time.
Before anyone says slicks, I'll just say: I wanna drive to the drag strip, drive it on the strip, and drive it back home all with the same setup

Most people shooting nitrous in first gear have AWD or RWD, big slicks with a monster turbo and low compression that doesn't spool up quickly (and most likely a higher redline than 7000rpm. I can see one of us crashing into the limiter easily trying that stunt), not the regular joe with 9.6 compression and a 16G turbo kit. A single turbo race supra or RX-7, Sean Glazers 9sec AWD are the type of cars that benefit from NOS off the line. A lot of the FWD racers like Ed bergenholz and Kirk Gorgon (once turbo'd) dont use nitrous until 3rd gear. If you check the time slips at clubdsm you'll see that except for the elite few nitrous/turbo cars aren't any quicker than the turbo only cars.
