Yep it finslly happened. Here are my compression numbers..
From the passenger side 210,210,60,210. I knew the day would come but I dodnt plan on it being so soon. Looks like I am going to get a small lone around $2500 to get the damn thing rebuilt. I am not as pissed as I thought I would be. I am looking forward to running 15psi on a built engine.

I think it was just from my internals wearing out. I have gone 19,000 turbo miles and I have 92,000 miles on my engine. Nothing happened except a CEL came on and it idles funny. It still runs. I have a question though.....Can I still drive the car with these compression numbers for like a week or so. I am probably ordering the rebuild kit tomorrow from howell. Now I need to find a shop that can do the work. I am about to owe a lot of money :'( .

Well I just got off the phone with howell. The rebuild kit should be here in about 3-5 days!!! Look out stage three here I come. I have to look for a place to do my rebuild for me though. I dont know what to think right now. I am kinda mad that my engine is dead but on the other hand I am happy that I am about to become stage 3. Its a weird feeling. My engine held up to some harsh abuse. I am glad that I got 19,000 miles and 11 months of turbo out of her. Now she is goign to be built and like new.

I suspected as much when you complained of a code 43. This is why i asked about your idle quality and compression numbers...

Sorry to hear it, bro.

haha I kinda figured it was about this when I saw the subject. Anyway sorry to hear it dude my engine is on it's last leg also. 150 130 130 150. Why is always the center cylinders that go first, it might have something to do with the star manifold O_o I got about the same amount of turboed miles as you also and I'm at like 94k right now. Though the car runs perfectly fine cept for a blown manifold gasket. I'm trying to get it to 100k so I can say the engine survived hell until 100k ^_^ then rebuild and do all that crazy 100k maintenance.

good luck dude that really sux how only one cylinder gave up on you and the rests are in perfect condition. Did you try adding oil to that bad one? haha my compression numbers have never hit 200 ever since I got the car emoji

Yeah you were right. Didnt you mention something about blowing my engine about a month ago? Well anyway....How much do you guys think I am going to spend on the rebuild. I am going to shop around and see what people are chargeing around here to do it. I just want a number so I can compare. I am going to drop the car off there with the rebuild kit and have them do it all. I hope it isnt going to be a lot more than $1000. What do you think?

Damn, man, sorry to hear about this. Sounds almost like how mine was when it happened. One day it drives strong (no signs), then one day, while pulling into my parking space at my apartment, the engine began to shake and smoke came from the engine (oil burning from oil being spit out from the breather filter). Just like my engine, the compression in #3 cylinder was about 60 psi. Well, at least, you thought it could happen. Good luck!

Whoah, dark0ne can be pimped out?! Nice! Dino, you get to come help put mine back together. muahahhaa

For the record, I ran my poor car a couple thousand miles on a very obviously cracked piston. We'll see how scored the cylinders are soon, but the worst that happened was having to add half a quart of oil every 100 miles.

Dave!!!!! Take Dino's word for it!!!!! it's cheaper to get the plane ticket!!!

If you end up doing that I want to know when it will be done. I live in Jacksonville and I know you are from Fla. so I can probably go and help. I don't know much about a rebuild but I know some engine stuff and willing to learn/help!!! Good luck with it bro...

How difficult is it to do a re-build? IS there like a write-up somewhere? Would any one be willing to make one? Or is it something that has to be experienced to fully comprehend? I mean, Can i just go to the library get a book on engines and stuff, study it and learn enough to attemp it myself? Or is this a mechanic school only kinda thing?

Physically a re-build isnt that hard. but there are LOTS of specs you need to get right. and believe it or not, remembering where everything goes isnt as easy as u would think. we have rebuilt 4 420A engines now(including mine). experiance is invaluable when doing a rebuild. i wouldnt say the normal joe couldnt do it...but there is tons of stuff you dont think about. about the cost...expect between 200-300 for machine work(overbore, hone, hot tank, crank if needed), at least those are the prices around here. far as pulling the engine and putting it back in.... i dunno an exact price, but id expect another 400-500 bucks for that. so 1000 would be right at what it should be.... maybe a little more. too bad you dont live up here in TN man, we could pull it ourselves and save ya some money. goodluck with it.

Dave,

You can do it yourself. It isn't as hard as it seems. You just need a garage to do the work in, a cherry picker, and some gear pullers. Those things along w/ the normal tools you would use while working on your car. Wrenches, screwdrivers, jack stands, stuff like that.

Just jack your car up and start unbolting things. One good way to remember where everything goes is to get plastic bags that you can write on. Every bolt or clamp just gets put into it’s own bag and labeled. I also put a piece of tape on hoses and other things w/ a label of their location. You can pull the block w/ the tranny, head, intake manifold all still on the car. All you have to do is get everything else. Don’t take off the a/c or power steering pumps. Just unbolt them from their brackets and move them out of the way. I used zip ties to keep them still and out of my way. Slap the cherry picker on and unbolt the mounts.

After you get it out take the block to a machinist and have them bore, hone, polish the crank journals, and balance that bad boy.

Once you get it back all you need to do is slap it back in and walla.

I did skip a lot of stuff and made it seem real easy. Yes, it is easy (mentally) but it takes a lot of work and is time consuming.

I say do it yourself, you will save a lot of money and you will never need to go to a mechanic for anything again because you will know how to get to and take off everything on your car. If you get into any problems you have this board to help. A lot of people have done the rebuild themselves and are always willing to help out in any way they can.

If you have a good machine shop working on your side you could pull the engine on a weekend and have it at the machine shop during the following week. If everything goes well you could be putting the engine back in the following weekend.

Dave I live in FL too, Hernando County. Thats about 60-70 miles directly west of Orlando. Try Titan Motorsprts. Remember the black 9 second Supra at Gainesville?? That's their's. Here's there number: 1.407.977.9sec. If they're too expensive I can ride out there with some friends and help you do it for sure as long as we can crash for the night. Let me know. Here's my number: 1.352.686.4792 ask for Sean. If I am not home leave a message.

Titan is very expensive. They charged a guy from this board a little over $1000 for a turbo install. Thats just crazy! I am not going there. Have you ever pulled an engine before? I am seriously thinking about just taking the car down there and saying here rebuild it for me. I really dont have time to do it myself. I work moinday through friday and only have the weekends off.

First off, it cant be done unless you have tools?? You have tools, right?? If not I'm sure we can bring most of what we need. You'll need a cherry picker, an engine stand, car jacks, etc, etc.... If you're interested in my help just give me a ring at 352.686.4792. Sean

Sounds tempting but I have no engine stand and no cherry picker. I appreciate the offer though.

BTW are you stage 3?

I rented a cherry picker for $20 a day. Call any equipment rental place, they should have it. (Home depot, PDQ, etc.)

I DIDN'T rent an engine stand, and just plopped the engine (gently) on the crank pulley. Anyone know if I should get it on a stand ASAP? Or will it survive? Should i rest it on the oil pan instead?

Oh, and I'm going to TRY and do a writeup of it all... for now there's just my pictures. I don't know crap about taking engines apart, 'cept what you guys help me with. (thx!)

I think all the frustrations and head aches that go along with taking an engine apart and putting it back together isnt worth saving a few hundred bucks. I would rather pay a little more than have major problems trying to do it myself. I cant afford to have to much down time either. I only have one car. So if I drop it off I hope they can get it back to me in like a week or two.
