as i was leaving work last night i ended up by a 1G TSi AWD. we ran a few times one in front of the other and when we reached a light with two lanes we took off. i ended up putting about a half-length on him at about 85-90mph before we let off (i was in third). at the next light he was all about "what turbo do you have and this and that" and we got to talking for a second. he said he ran a 14.9 @ 90mph...is this about right for a 1G AWD? i dont think he was modded but i heard a BOV, i wasnt sure if the BOV's on stock 4g's were audible. but at our speed i assume we ran almost exactly a quarter mile before letting off, so what kind of time am i looking at here if he ran 14.9 and i was right there with him?

(maybe this belongs in the racing section)? it was funny though, he said he lost sight of me for a second when we ran teh first time cause i was in front with him following me and when i went for the 1-2 shift i looked back and could see through his headlights a thick cloud of smoke (the same white smoke ive been seeing since day one). he said it blocked his vision for a second...damn.

are there any other ways to test for coolant leaks without disassembling anything, because i dont run hot and my coolant level stays the same? so what else could the white smoke be? (im running rich, btw)

Well you have to figure in the fact that the AWD *should* be faster simply because his 60' times are around 2.0 or lower.

14.9 means he is completely stock. Either that, or his engine is in bad shape or his clutch is dead.

For being a FWD, you should certainly pull on him from a roll. I think it would be safe to say you are in the high 14s though with the 19" wheels.

As for the white smoke... could it be really light blue?

hmm, you think his car is in that bad of shape? i thought stock those cars didnt break 14's? but anyway, yeah, the 19s dont help, nor does the 90 pounds in stereo equipment, but if i am in the 14's on 19s i am happy. that means i could be mid 14's on 14's. confused yet? i want a pair of nitto 15" street drags for that though. what are some of you other stage one guys running?

but about the smoke, i guess ti could be blue (it makes more sense because i do have an oil leak right now and my head was replaced about 12000 miles ago). but it sure doesnt look like it has any sort of blue tint to it

A 1G AWD, stock, will do low 14's. With only a boost controller set to 17 psi, a friend of mine did a 13.6 E/T. Of course, his 60' was something like a 1.8-.9, something a FWD will never see on street tires.

well thats funny, cause, as i expected, all the sites i found that list stock times for this car (car and driver, motor trend, etc) list it no where near low 14's.

motor trend, 1990 GSX, 15.2 @ ???
car & driver, 12/1/92, 1992 GSX 15.0 @ 88mph
motor trend 9/1/92, 1992 TSi AWD, 15.2
1990 TSi AWD, 15.0

so i'd like to know who they hired to drive these cars that were pulling low 15s when the cars pull low 14's stock?

well I got some data to back your numbers up. I hit a 14.85 on my HKS turbo timer. Yeah it's not accurate but you can guess the real time is around there. That was after I added the intercooler.

A. A STOCK GSX will in fact run high 14's and nothing more except for the few freak exceptions. Read the word: STOCK - not free mods.

B. Any quoted 1/4 mile time is shit if it did not happen on a track or was timed professionaly. Be aware magazines are not worth more than bench racing due to the fact that they use a timing gun and not a light beam as well as different surfaces. This leads to uncomparable times. No G-Techs, turbo timers, etc.

C. Racing another is highly inaccurate and only tells you that you were able to beat that car in those conditions. From a roll does not equate to a 1/4 mile as a car reacts differently in all situations.

D. If a person must absolutely refuse to hit a real track to find out what their car can really do then the best they can do is to simply bench race and compare to other people with similar mods who went to the track and did post times.

E. This does in fact belong in the racing section. emoji

The 1990 1G AWD had an S-AFC, a 3" cat-back and was running 16 psi on 93 octane. He ran a 13.57 with a 1.87 60'. No other mods done.
