#18886, "BOV when reving...."

I haver this video courtesy of Thunderous Talon that shows an avenger with the HRC kit making his BOV go off when reving his engine. Mine used to do it when I was stage 1 but now that I have the intercooler on it doesnt do it anymore. HOw come htat guy can do it with stage 2 and I cant? I would love to be able to do it while reving.

only way i can think of to do that is to buy an aftermarket valve and install in normally, then reinstall the 3KGT valve on a second flange, only hook it up backwards...not sure if that would work, but i figure it would blow off only you wouldnt be able to build boost because it would blow off during intake rather than surge. let us kow if you find out...maybe he had the BOV speaker kit under the hood, yeah

i always thought it was cause the star kit come with a bypass valve not a blow off valve.

Well mine does it you just can't hear it. When I rev the engine and I put my hand over the BOV vent I feel air come out. What diameter piping did you use when you did your intercooler piping? I used 2.5 inch and I get BOV flutter. You might have to turn up the boost who knows. The turbos on the star kit are huge that could tell something too.

Kory told me that to make that BOV sound when you rev you have to have a small turbo running high boost...

The more boost, the louder the BOV sound will be. I heard a 1g at 22 psi revving and it made the sweetest BOV sound. It's most likely just not enough boost building up to make a loud sound. The piping may have to do with it. Also check for boost leaks. As far as I know, almost every car should be able to make the BOV go off while revving. If it's the 3kgt bov, you can't really hear it though. Greddy Type S should definitely be heard though. Also try adjusting your BOV. It made be pretty tight (which may be good for actual boosting, but not as easy to go off for showing off).

Like I've said before...take apart your BOV (GReddy) and take out the shorter spring. We don't (well I don't) boost enough to make the the BOV leak. Plus the boost is enuff to keep the valve closed and the vacumm is strong enuff to open it. When i was a stage one would BOV like it was coo and it'd make a 'metal ting' sound at the end. Since I went with the FMIC and took apart the spring it makes a long hi whistle. All BOVs sound bad ass when the boost is high...I wish I could vent at 22lbs

yea, i dont actually go into boost in idle, i just do a quick rev and itll go off. not nearly as loud as while im actually driving, but its still very audible (well, that video shows what it sounds like @ idle). also, i dont run high boost, only 7lbs of boost. besides, like i said, i dont go into boost @ idle.

someone asked what size piping: 2" turbo-to-FMIC, 2.5" FMIC-to-TB

Yes, I know this thread is almost 3 years old, but you know what, whats the REAL answer? I can rev my engine all the way up to like 6k rpm at idle and barely get the BOV to go off. I have seen other turbo 2gnt's rev to like 3k rpm and their shit is pretty loud. GST's can rev to like 2k rpm at idle and their BOV is loud too. What is the actual answer to why most of our BOV's wont go off when we rev at idle?

My guess is something to do with the vaccum. Mine goes off like a bitch at 5 PSI even at idle. I have the Greddy Type-S with one of the springs removed...

I have the HKS SSQ and I dont get shit. Of course I do feel air coming out, enough to move my hand at 6k. I guess it would be nice to showoff every now and then, but as long as its doing it job, Im happy.

it depends on what turbo you've got and how fast it can spool up without any load, if you've got anything bigger than a 16g than it'll probably be pretty faint, i can't get mine to go off that loud when im just reving

i have damn near the same set-up w/ a 16g, and iget nothing. i dont even think i can build boost unless under a load. i have tried and i can rev up to 6k+ and all i get is a little "queefe" of a sound. really not very "showy" at all.. emoji
now get me under a load, and its a differnt story...people in the next county are like "WTF???. emoji

I have the greddy type s and it blows off real loud when revved, the higher i rev the louder it is. I am not boosting while revving up, it just goes off real nice. I have no clue as to why others aren't going off, but i guess the ones with the greddy bov all go off nice and loud.

Adjust it all the way soft untill it leaks and then tighten it up a little. You only want it rock hard (lol) when you're racing (to help keep boost built between gears), as it reduces the life of the turbo. It will be louder the softer it is, because the BOV will open up further. You might be thinking that if it's set hard it will build more pressure and splurge it all at once, but since a BOV works via the pressure difference inside of it between the source (manifold) and piping it would rather open immediately when you let off the gas, because of the sudden vacuum surge.

well, i just took out 4 washers from my RFL so its only the spring now...still no boost while reving and certainly no blow off when reved.

whos getting blow off with stock internals? could it have anything to do with the degree the motor is built? or is it just a BOV thing...? we should start a poll.

I seen somebody post on here, it could the size of the turby and its ability to spool with no load. I believe I cant cuz of the size of my turbo, and piping size. Obviously the smaller the turbo the quicker the spool.

I have an HKS SSQ and I can blow off while revving.. I also have a T-25..

This one kid is always wanting me to do it everytime I pull up where he's at, he has to change his pants everytime(there's not many turbo's in my town lol). It's not as loud as when I'm driving but it's definately noticeable.

Yeah, I think it's the concensus that it's how quick the turbo spools, and the pressure drop across your intercooler plumbing.

so the spring screw should be loose then, hmmm.
ya i thought it would make it louder if i tightened it up, but in reality, it didnt. i will try loosening and see if i can get a good rev with it and if it gets louder. i just got 700 miles on my rebuild so im gonna turn up the boost to about 12-14psi now, i was boosting 8-10psi throughout the whole break in.
