#18057, "which will break first axles or differential?"

I still need to get my axles (stage 3) and a quaife. Funds and willingness to do the quaife are kinda sort at the time being. I am wondering, if I only have my stage 3 axles and the stock LSD will I be ok or will it matter? I know I need them both for the amount of boost soon to come. which would you go with first if you could only get one today? -- stage 3 axles -- quaife LSD --

Quaife. try changing transmissions everytime you break a diff as opposed ot changing axles every time you bust one emoji. replacemt axles are easy to install and free. easy decision.

Agreed. If you saw what All4thanookie's tranny looked like when we pulled it out this past weekend, you'd never run on a stock diff again. I'm still finding aluminum bits scattered around the garage. And he's mostly stock...

If you want to scare yourself from running a stock clutch/tranny/diff, check www.asog.net/kiku/bustedtrans

So armond, did autozone ban you from swapping axles under warranty? emoji I hope they didnt ban the rest of the country as well =)

ANSWER Diff. Well the problem here is that the diff pin tends to slip out and create a huge can opener like effect. For those people running up over 375 hp I would say to get the quaife. For those under I would recommend cracking the case, removing the chunk and welding the tips of the pins in. Also if you have over 60,000 miles on the car you might want to weld the pins in(especially if you drive hard). I realize people have been driving their cars for like 200,000 miles and shit w/ no probs but mine broke under 70,000. When my pin slipped out i was going from 2nd to 3rd and only going around 20mph. It felt like i hit an open pot hole. just an opinion late mike

I have my tranny out now doing the Quaife install, I think if people are intersted, I will atleast take pictures of the different steps, and maby a little write up, Armond has a good one, but I think pics would probably help out future guys maby a little more... or atlease I learn better with pictures, hehe emoji As for axles, I will get them sometime when my fiance will let me... i am supposed to be saving for a house... hehe... whoops emoji but yeah, QUAIFE first, axles later.. cause if you have to get stock replacements through autozone.. the y have a lifetime warrenty... if you snap em, over the counter exchange....

I've seen diffs come apart with stock hp, and mine came unglued with stage 2 hp, so at the very least you should weld in the spider gearshaft for 15 psi. If you can swing it, go for the quaife and you won't have to worry about it any more.

Perhaps you could try using a combo of the Phantom Grip LSD and welding the diff pin in place. It'll be less expensive than a Quaife.
The PG is not nearly as nice as having a real LSD, but is definitely better than stock. I think you can get them at Howell Automotive.

No sense in having all that turbocharged horsepower, and using only one drive wheel.
A side benefit of using an LSD is that it'll distribute the power to both wheels, making it less likely to break axles emoji

Hey Len.

You really should post here more often. You have the kind of experience and opinions we could benefit from.

Glad to see you post again.

Armond has a write up on his site (armond30.com) that will benefit you. He has a writeup for removing the transmission, I didnt even use the FSM's, just his writeup is good enough if you have general mechanical knowledge.

Also he has a writeup for removing the stock diff and installing a quaife, but just read the remove and install as a stock diff if your just welding the pin.

There are some inherrent flaws in the design of the Phantom Grip

1. The spring pressures needed to properlay engage the unit are excessive due to the coefficient of friction of the contacting serfaces. This, in my opinion, is higher preload on the cases than should be experienced.

2. There are production tolerances from diff to diff which are not allowed for in the Phantom design. In one application in which we have trial fitted one of their units, for example, the springs afforded with the unit were in coil bind when it was set up properly. That means an attempted solid connection, as you know.

I am working on having some kits made up that are custom made specifically for our diff. We can custom design the ammount of slip for different applications as well. They are currently in the testing phase so it wont be long until we're satisfied with the results and make some kits up for you guys.
