#16629, "i killed either my ring or my piston is cracked"

well add another person to the jacked ring/piston club. i was checking my car out for a bad idle and i pulled the oil stick out and putt putt putt putt little puffs of smoke came out of the dip stick tube and all that came to my mind is OH SHIT i knew what it was....we all know what it is. well i checked my compression and it was 180, 150, 180, 175. so im thinking it is cylinder #2. I have one question for anyone who knows. Is there any way i can verify if it is either bad rings or the piston is cracked without pulling my head. cause i think i'm gonna get the howell kit. i was also wondering if i could replace the pistons with stock bore JE's from howell or will i HAVE TO replace with .020 over.
Thanks
james

You can also do a leak down test. This will tell you alittle more. But from your numbers it seems like the #2. Its Prob. a ring.

You can choose from standard or over .020.

you can use standard bore as long as you dont want the 8.5 compression pistons...they only will sell them in .020 overbore, least thats what they told me.

one more question regarding the howell kit.
the bearings, how do you know if you need the .010 undersize bearings.

Get stock size bearings.

You'll only need undersize if you spun one and have to machine down the journals to clean them up..

150 PSI of compression isn't "bad" per se .. get a leakdown test before you go tearing into it. When mine was bad enough to send puffs of oil vapor out, i had 60psi compression in one cylinder.

If you ever kill your car, immediately open your oil filler cap, and add oil, you'll get oil vapor/smoke. It happens. At 150PSI of compression.. i don't think you have anything at all to worry about, personally.

ha u call 150 low for compression. Try 75-200-210-95. That was mine and car is about to be fixed and sold along w/ turbo kit.

I agree w/ Dino. You can do a "wet" compression test. This will help decide if it's a ring or piston. Sometimes with a leakdown its hard to tell if it's ring or piston failure, but a leakdown test NEVER hurts. 150 psi is still not bad.

Shit is all apart. Typical...

cool thanks everyone i think i'm just gonna order the howell kit anyways and then see what's up,
those puffs of smoke i see coming out of my dip stick hole, is that a symptom of a bad ring? i'll do a wet compression test today and see what i find.
