#15988, "Why doesn't the DFI work w/ ignition??? (2 questions)"

The gen 6 is unable to control ignition, right? I called HRC and they said they where working on the gen 7 but it too couldn't control the ignition just like the gen 6. That is the reason for the delay in them having it. I guess they want to get it to control the ignition as well as the fuel. So my questions is why can't it control the ignition on our cars. The DFI is or was designed to control both. Right?

Also

I need something (haven’t decided what) to control my fuel and ignition. Would you:

a) Get the gen 6 DFI and something to
control the ignition, i.e. crane, msd.

b) Get a Haltech unit

c) Get the gen 7 and something to control
the ignition, then when HRC fixes it to
control the ignition, sell the ignition
control and do what ever is needed to get
the gen 7 to do fuel/ignition

Thanks

The DFI is designed for distributed ignition systems, not direct-fire, distributorless systems like ours.

But if you ask me, the ability to control your fuel maps with such precision makes it worth it to me.

The Haltech may be a good choice since it does both. The price is about the same as a dfi gen 6.
I'm just using my dis2 to adjust the timing on mine. This new programable one looks like it will do it nicely. I was so tempted to install it last night, but i guess i can wait till sat emoji
Isn't there someone here running the Haltech?

We (Armond and I) went the Gen VI/DIS-2 programmable route. It kind of sucks having a standalone that is not really standalone, but it seems to work fine anyway. The car is still pretty damn driveable as it sits. In fact, it feels like a stock car with a lot of power using the Gen VI. I am happy with my setup so far. I am dissapointed about the Gen VII though as I thought it would handle timing and that would be a cool way to go in the future.

Someone should try the AEM ecu. I would if I were willing to put the work into wiring it up and building fuel maps and were currently looking into a new standalone setup.

When i talked to gary at howell he was saying somthing about how there working on making the gen 7 a full standalone or somthing, so the stock ecu will be removed.

As a side note the dfi's gary sells also come with the clamp software so you can edit it and all the sensors, not like hrc's stripped down version

get the haltech if you have a lot of time for downtime n' shit, cause the dfi is cake to install so i've heard to installing a fully standalone unit... gen6 is fine, get one when the gen7's are out, cause price will probably drop a little due to a newer version being availiable...

So, from what I am reading the simple approach would be to get the gen 6 and ignition control unit.

Would that set up be able to handle 625cc injectors???

Yes. Absolutely. I am running 625's and it idles like stock. Armond is running 720's with a killer fuel setup and cams and is still able to idle fine. It will pretty much handle whatever you throw at it.

Oh, and the install is pretty simple for a standalone. The real work comes in the tuning. You get base maps which will let the car start, but you still usually need to tune it out some for your specific setup.
