Hey I was wondering how hard it is to replace our clutch. If it wasn't too hard i probably would do it myself. I installed the HRC atage II by myself, is it more of a pain than that installation? or would i just be better of having somebody do it. i just don't trust any mechanic, even at the dealer they tend to fuck shit up. thanks james

It all depends on how confident you feel. Have you or one of your friends replaced a clutch in a front wheel drive car before??
Ive replaced two clutches in a 91 Mirage, one in a 92 Laser, one in my talon and one in a daytona. They are all pretty similar.
To answer your question more directly--Yes it is a pain because you have two ways of doing it. You can drop just the tranny(from the bottom) or you can pull the whole motor through the top.
Ive done it both ways and I thought it was almost easier to pull the motor, but that is my opinion.
I am not trying to discourage you, because I had a lot of fun figuring this stuff out my first time. Just make sure you have someone who knows their shit to guide you through it

It's definately a 2-man job. I've had the tranny out of my car 3 times in the last 6 months. It is a pain in the ass getting everything lined back up, but normally about a 6-8 hour job with breaks. Of course that's in a garage using jack stands and a floor jack. If you have access to a lift and a tranny jack you could probably cut the time in half.

Make sure to get the lubricant that goes in the cb joints before you start. Goto Track Auto and get the Chilton's. It will tell you EXACTLY how to take tranny out and put it back on. You need a special kind of lub that I could only find at Mitsubishi. =< Its like 15$ a quart.[br />

I have not replaced a clutch before, i have mitsubishi's FSM, is chilton's any better? if it is going to be a PITA then maybe i'll let someone else do it. if i was to drop the tranny out the bottom, is there enough clearance to slide the clutch and parts off the output shaft. and is there any special tools needed other than the clutch alignment tool. i've fot 90000 miles on my car and i think my clutch may go soon, i have not been having any problems yet (knock on wood) but with the turbo and all i know that shit's gotta be pretty thin now. any recommendations on a good clutch that is not rediculously undriveable. I like the driveability, my friend has a centerforce in his 200sx sr20det, and i hate that shit, it has either grab or no grab. sucks butt thanks james

i just pulled the tranny out in about 4 hours, doing the work myself. The most time consuming is partially dissasembling your suspension to take the drive shafts out. Then it just takes a bit of finesse to unbolt your tranny and support your engine right (because your engine will only be held up by the passenger's motor mount!) then dropping the tranny. I have an engine hoist and one jack so i was able to do things a bit easier. Once the tranny is out, its easy to swap clutches. Hell its easy to swap differentials.

i'm in Cerritos, California, thanks for the info, i'll conteplate doing it myself, i need to change the seals on the output on the tranny. they are leaking a little tranny fluid. you think it is harder to put the turbo kit in or to change the clutch? thanks James
