#15869, "Custom Turbo Install Need HELP!"

Ok I want to do a custom turbo install. Can anyone give me a list of everything I need, and instructions on how to install a kit. It cant be that hard. I just got done changing my head gasket and cams. I was looking at some kits and $2700 is just to much. All I know is the basics:

-Turbo
-turbo Manifold
-Intercooler
-pipes for IC
-Fuel Pump
-BOV

I know I need some sort of lines or hoses. If anyone had some instructions on a turbo kit install or any info would help. and pics of where to hook up stuff would be good.

There's a LOT more that is needed for a turbo. You need a fuel system, oil lines, vac lines, fittings, etc. . .

You really won't save that much by going with a custom setup vs a kit. Some yes, but is that extra few hundred dollars worth the piece of mind that tons of other people have sucessfuly used the kit for long periods of time??? My advice would be to start looking for a used kit here & on eBay, etc... if you want to save money (especially since you are new to the turbo scene). They are out there (thats how I got mine) and you can save some decent cash that way.

I got mine off of eBay. A guy was selling it off of his avenger. I bought it for 2000 (HRC Stage 2) but it was missing a fuel pump, and almost every little fitting. I called HRC when I got it and they went through the entire parts list with me and made sure that I had everything. I figure I paid about 2300 for a complete stage 2 kit.

if you wanna save some money do what I did. Haha then again I got that BB option which drove it up to stage 2 costs anyway. But I bought a stage 1 kit which you can get for around 1700-2000 nowadays and custom intercool it yourself. Saves me 800 bux. The custom intercooler cost me around 200 to get in there but hey 600 bux saved I can't argue.

How could you say that. I just want some help. So many people have turbo kits, and they come with instructios. All I want is to see what and where to install oil lines and such. I know for a fact it could be alot cheaper to do a custom set up as well.

I'm thinking less than $1000 for a intercooled turbo, but since no one can give me some instructions I might call someone who maks a kit. I bet alot of people did't even install there own turbo kit. I mean how do you calculate that it would be the same price. I could get the following:

Intercooler - $50
turbo manifold - $220
Turbo - $200
BOV - $50
Fuel Pump - $100
MAP Volt - $50
Lines - $50
Boost guage - $50
Boost controler - $100
FPR - $100

The hardest part would be to connect the down pipe to the turbo.

I would like to see some real world examples of these prices. You forgot piping and a few small things.

Oh, and I think a lot of people on here have installed their own setup and do the work on their cars themselves. Go look at www.armond30.com for an example.

I am only making a point that before someone were to try and assemble their own pieces they should know enough about the car and engine so as they would not question what they need or where it should go. The few people on here who have successfully installed a custom setup did not have to ask how or they worked with someone locally that could be a reference. I recommend first buying the factory shop manual and then reading as much as you can on general turbo theory.

It is ok to ask specific questions, but asking what you need is far too general. I say you need some more time and experience first before blowing your engine.

I'm sorry but obviously your numbers are a bit mixed up, My custom kit costed me 1200 in parts, BEFORE shipping, and I got probably another few hundred dollars in parts for free from a few buddies on the board. Let's go over this list ok?? BTW I am assuming this is all USED equipment because tehre's no way you can get any of this new for the price you have listed except for the turbo manifold, which is 220 from Alain.
Intercooler - $50 (yeah for a 1st gen stock side mount, if you even found a cheap starion, you would still have to pay at least another 60-100 bucks in modifications, but if you want a STOCK sidemount so be it)
turbo manifold - $220 (sounds fair, just make sure it doens't crack like mined did)
Turbo - $200 (umm, what kind of turbo??? Maybe a 14b or t-25 but surely not a 16g or t3/4)
BOV - $50 (the only BOV for this price is the 1st gen)
Fuel Pump - $100 (A used Walbro is about 100 bucks)
MAP Volt - $50 (If this is the FCD, than I don't know where you're going to find one used, it's more like 78 bucks)
Lines - $50 (Tru, the lines <vacuum, fuel, stainless steel> might only run 50 bucks, BUT, what about those fittings???... Do you even know what fittins you would need?? How about this one, you will need a special NPT that screws onto your fuel rail that goes to your FPR before you run it down below your car ALL the way back into your fuel tank (assuming you're OBD2)? How much did that ONE fitting cost?? At the local hydraulic shop it was about 30 bucks for one stupid fitting. YOu could try HRC, and see if they'll sell it. You will need several of these "fittings"
Boost guage - $50 (ok, 50 bucks) stil missing some stuff though
Boost controler - $100 (soudnds right, for a manual controller)
FPR - $100 (What kind do you need, do you know?? plus if you get an adjustable one, it's 200 bucks, even for a vortech 12:1 I think that runs 150)

What about piping?? (200+)
What about welding misc. (ie BOV flange) (100+)
What about other important gauges (A/F, EGT)
What about the steel braided OIL line?? (depends on what turbo you're gonig to use)
What about silicone couplings to connect the pipes??? (be prepared to get raped, unless you want some Home Depot shit)
Than there's your misc. Bolts, clamps, extra gaskets in case your old ones are shit.........

Well i'm too tired to finish this....u get the idea....

Comming Soon: Venom Basic Nitrous (50 shot), OBX Headers
OBX HEADERS?
I thought you were getting a custum turbo kit? What do you need headers for?
VENOM BASIC NITROUS?
Without internals you going to blow your motor (turbo/nitrous) setup.
If you car is a 96+ Venom wont can't help you.

I don't have a turbo on my car because I don't have the money for one just like you. But I know alot more about turbo charging and I highly recommend you make a stop by a book store. This is the best way to learn what the system is made of and how it works. Then you can try making your own kit.

Do your homework before you criticize other people on the board. They have a great deal more experiance than you do and you should respect them for that!

We are here to learn more about our motor and discuss differant idea's with one another.

Try and be more respectful to others on the board and above all

ok I have a 95 Talon. I only was getting headers and venom if I don't go turbo.

All I want is a specific parts list, and instructions on the install(from a turbo kit) Thats it! and all I get is people telling me to buy a turbo kit or a custom job is just the same. Well $1200 is a lot less. If you look on ebay you can find stuff so cheep.

I admit I dont know alot about a turbo or how to hook one up, but that is why I posted in the first place. If I had instructions and a parts list I could start the setup.

When you buy a turbo kit dont you get instruction on the install? and a parts list? Thats all I want.

Heh you know what you can do is save up for a 1G GSX if you really must have turbo. It'll cost your around 2k-4k and it'll be light and AWD.

But if you insist on doing a custom kit, try looking in some of the magazines, they have custom turbo kit fabricators and stuff in there.
Here's the link to my turbo install album, hope it helps.
http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4292218287
Here's some other pix
http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4292220123
Don't ask what that HKS filter is doing there...

If a lot of people are telling you don't do a custom kit you should listen because everyone here has experience and we don't want you to jack up your car. A couple people have custom turbo setups and I hear their manifolds crack and stuff.

And for the record I installed my turbo kit all by myself, took me 4 days on and off work to get it working. Now think with a half assed custom turbo kit how long your car will be out of commission, gotta think about that also. Can you afford to have your car down for a couple days maybe even weeks. Who know you probably forgot to buy something half way through and your screwed cuz you gotta order it. I know when I got my kit I took trips back and forth from Kragen to get supplies in my dad's 4runner.

I still want a list of this $1200 total and the exact parts.

Are you aware of different core efficiencies, cfms, housing sizing, fuel pressure rating, pump flow ratings, timing, fuel curves, piping sizing and their effects, voltage, and egt's?

>When you buy a turbo kit dont you get instruction on the
>install? and a parts list? Thats all I want.

So then you have a parts list that will not match yours and your $1200 kit. What is the point? You are looking for an easy way out. Your $1200 turbo fix will cost you that much again and more in a new motor after you blow it.

Look, All I want to a turbo, but not to spend a lot of money. Here is what I've found out so far.

-I want a turbo manifold that wont crack. So i'm getting a HRC Manifold for $275

-I got a MSD DIS-2 so I could retard timing for the turbo.

-All I want is a stock turbo. When I look in my car book the turbo need 2 oil lines, 2 water lines, and a vac line. I found that for the oil lines I could run one from where my oil press gauge is and then tap into the oil pan for the return. but I still dont know about the water and vac lines.

-one problem is getting the turbo's 02 housing to bolt up to my down pipe.

-I'm just going to custom make my own IC pipe

Here is a list and prices of some things I need

-Manifold $275
-Turbo $50-$150
-Intercooler $50
-Lines and fittings $100
-MAP Volt $75
-1G BOV $50
-IC pipe $75
-Some sort of FPR $100
-Fuel Pump $110
-boost controle $100
-Turbo timer $100

I know I need some more stuff. All I want to run is 5-7 pounds.

I could use any help on hooking up the turbo.

All I know is I would rather run NOS for $500 than spend $3000+ on a turbo system. My car was only $4500

HadesOmega: that's a nice site, very helpfull. What is that can connected to the valve cover breather? Where did you get it? And, what did you do about the down pipe touching the oil pan? Good site, gives you a good idea of how hard it is, although I'm sure there is much more involved then in the pics. The only thing I don't understand about the turbo kit is why do you need a fuel return line for OBDII cars? I know preOBDII already have a fuel return, why do you need to add one on OBDII? One more question, where are you supposed to put the extra gages if you have power mirrors(and don't want to put it on the A pillar)?

(sigh) well if you "only want to run 5-7" pounds of boost...
than you don't get a stock turbo.....

WHY? u ask....<this is why you do some research first>

because the wastegate....u know what a wastegate is? Well anyhow because the wastegate on both the 14b and t-25 are over 10 lbs.
Or you can get a different wastegate........where?? u find out

Thanx Speedracerindy emoji

That's my JAZ oil catch can. Basically it catches the oil that splurts out from your valve cover under heavy load or hard cornering. I had a gay Weapon Rice breather filter that look like a BOV and I melted that sucka cuz the turbo heats up the engine bay a lot. After my first autox I had oil all over my valve cover cuz the thing melted, haha I've never had blow by like you when added the turbo.

Haha you know what I broke my oil sensor when I took it out, sucked I glued it (haha yup that was dumb) back together and put it back on. The thing worked for a while then one night it just blows up and oil all over my drive way. Woohoo talk about a brush with engine lock up.

No they won't. That's why you need an install kit to put a 16G on the 4G63. So if you get an HRC manifold (which I don't think they sell) then you'd need like a 16G..

Eww ... ok to set a few things straight we are going to stop talking about 4g63s in general and speak in terms of generation dsms (because the turbo DOESN'T bolt to the engine and 1st gens and 2nd gens have different exhaust manifolds.)

1. 16g will bolt on to a 1st gen no problem. A 14b and a 16g use the same exhaust housing (so does the big 16g for that matter).
2. 16g will NOT bolt on to a 2nd gen. You will need an install kit for it. The 16g and the t-25 do not use the smae exhaust flange (or anything else for that matter).
3. I heard the HRC does sell their manifold seperately but I was pretty sure it was more expensive that $275.
4. I do not believe that either the standard 16g or t-25 will bolt up to the HRC manifold. As far as I know HRC has their own turbos (ie the SUPER 16g and SUPER 20g). Their exhaust side is different. I'm not sure how much. Hence I'm under the impression that regular mitsu turbos won't bolt to the HRC manifold (if someone has POSITIVE knowledge of this please inform us).
5. The wastegate actuator on both the stock 14b and t-25 is set over 10psi ( i think the t-25 is at 14 or something).

I don't mean to sound rude, and i'm sure someone has stated this before:

If you have to ask these kinds of questions (Can i get a parts list, what should i get, etc) you shouldn't be attempting a custom setup. The kinds of people that can have and do have custom, backyard turbocharged setups never had to ask these questions: they knew what had to be done and did it.

I commend you for the thought and the attempt, but i don't think it's the best way for you, based on the things you've asked for and questioned. I certanly don't think you can do it. You CAN, and perhaps will, but it'll be a long hard road for something that in the end, could have been done quicker, easier, and cheaper if you'd have just bought a kit.

JMHO.

I think I'm just going to go with NOS and a body kit. The cost would be around the same. and I dont really care if I have the power all the time. Thanks for telling me to go to hell with a backyard turbo. I probably would have blown my engine. A stage one only gets you like 60 HP. So nitrous might be the best for me. I just was a fast a$$ car.

yeah nitrous is cool...but if you haven't been in a boosted car, you're missing out. trust me i've used nitrous and it gets old after awhile having to refill the bottle for $50, and you really don't get that much power out of it. for 100 shot, please...it depends. you'll see when you get it, its an awesome rush at 1st, but watch, when you race people with turbos. you'll regret it. save $$$!!!!
