#15518, "can you be lean and rich ? help a frustrated moron..."

When i go up a hill (no matter the gear, rpm, or speed... and when i say hill, i mean about 500 feet at around 5-10% climb, nothing crazy) My egt rises really quick if i try accelerating. If i try to stay at a even speed it will still climb to about 1400-1500 degrees. If i try to accelerate up the hill (even gradually), it'll easily reach 1600 degrees. All that is a sign of being lean right? On flat and semi-flat road, the a/f reads .95-.98 (sometimes even a little higher) And the egt doesn't climb fast at all. I can go all the way to redline without reaching 1500 degrees.

When the motor is cold and i go up a hill the fuel cuts off and on. And the egt goes up a heck-a-lot faster. Cold or Warm motor, the egt rising rapedly under boost AND vacuum.

I am going to check my spark plugs to see what they tell me, but i dunno if they'll tell me anything b/c i seem to be running lean/rich depending on road conditions. what do you advise me doing? i can't stop the car and rich her out for hills and then stop the car again and lean it out when the road gets flat.

A side note of other problems that i doubt affect anything but i may as well say em just in case they do affect things.
-small exhaust leak at the downpipe/turbo housing
-i mentioned the fuel cutting when the motor is cold
-when i'm playing the stereo loud and the bass hits, the egt gauge cuts off (goes back to below zero as if its off) and cuts back on after the bass hit. I checked all wires... they all seem fine.

Auto?

Make it downshift.. When you go uphill, there is more load on the motor which causes it to work harder. Since the engine creates more than stock power, the TCU sees the load% as lower, and so doesn't force the tranny to downshift.

You may also want to check your static fuel pressure and bump it up a little if it is lower than 48PSI or so.

Welcome to the wonderful world of boosted engines. That just happens. The more load you put on an engine, the hotter the EGTs run. There is really no way to avoid it other than to keep it in a lower gear and try to stay out of boost.

i always actually probably have my static fuel pressure too high. its closer to 55-60 than 48. Could that be why my fuel is cutting out up a hill when its cold? Too rich? When its warm it doesn't cut though... does climate affect it that much ?

The EGT temp you mentioned, going up hill, is pretty normal--at least that's what I noticed with mine. Also, I think your base fuel pressure is a bit high; running rich can also give you a higher EGT temp. Other than that, I wouldn't worry about it.

Like the others mentioned, greater load increases EGT's. I often see 1500+ cruising up a hill. Bumping up your static fuel pressure probably won't change a thing. If you are cruising up that hill at anything less than 80% throttle, the ECU is reading the O2 sensor and adjusting fuel how it wants to. It could care less if you increase fuel pressure. When it is reading that O2 sensor, it is adjusting the fuel for maximum Cat conv efficiency. That is pretty much stoic. This will make you run a little hot. If you floor the gas pedal, I bet the egts will drop to 1500 or less whether you are going uphill or flat. When you floor it, the ECU stops reading the O2 sensor and just dumps the fuel in corresponding to MAP, ECT, IAT, whatever. The engine should run richer and cooler. And get the exhaust leak fixed. A leak before the O2 sensor may cause improper fuel adjustment by the ECU.

>i always actually probably have my static fuel pressure too
>high. its closer to 55-60 than 48.

higher pressure = less flow. so when you're boosting up a hill, under torque, you're probably wanting to flow the max amount of fuel possible.

but since your FPR is set to restrict flow to rise the fuel pressure ... at full boost, you aren't getting enough flow.

this could be because 1) your fuel pump can't flow enough fuel to the injectors at 120psi (FPR restricted), or 2) your injectors stop working, and actually jam up and flow less at 130+psi (check your fuel press when EGTs go nuts).

for me, if my static pressure is anything over 55, i get knock and detonation whenever I'm at full boost or going up hills. No EGT yet, but i bet they're WAY up there...

My EGT goes nuts at idle as well... i highly doubt its too high then.

yeah egts should soar when going up a hill. My car is always rich even at half throttle going up a steep hill. I don't have an EGT yet though but heh I can tell the car gets a lot hotter cuz the air coming out of the vents is hot and I can smell exhuast from the dump pipe going out of the vents.

Just wondering but does ne1 know if getting an oil cooler will lower EGTs? LIke you have an EGT and you get this amount of heat cruising then you installed the oil cooler and the differnce you noticed?
