#15410, "Is the turbo worth it?"

Hey I've got a 97 Talon and I really want to put a turbo kit on it but my engine has got about 65k miles and i dont know if it will be worth putting a turbo kit on it with that many miles. And I was also thinking instead of putting a turbo kit on it would it be better to put on a turbo engine with less miles, because then i would be able to put out more boost and upgrade to a bigger turbo. Please help me out with this because I'm all confused on what I should do.

check compression, may need to rebuild internals, other then that you should be golden for turbo, there is people on here with more miles and a turbo so it's doable emoji

This question is asked every week. I turbo'ed my car w/ 66K on it, dsmnt96 turbo'ed his and have over 80K and Im pretty sure there re like 2 guys on here w/ over 100K miles turbo'ed. 4g63 motor wont fit in our cars so just check your compression. Has your timing belt, water pump, head gasket and all that jazz been replaced before 60K or no? Try to check that out but u probably dont need to rebuild motor, just dont run to much boost. 8psi or less to be safe. Even w/ running that boost you can still have problems but your car will drop around 2-2.5 secs off 1/4 mile depending on the driver w/o a rebuild.

So far I have changed my timing belt and water pump and that was at around 59k. Also I try and keep up with maintenance like oil changes and ect. So from what you guys are saying sounds like my engine will do fine with a turbo kit. Now all I have to do is save up a couple more hundred and I'll be set to go. I was probably going to go with the Hahn Stage 2 because I haven't really heard much about the Star kits. And if I ever do uprade to like a stage 3 or higher, how hard is it to rebuild your engine. Thanks for all the help. Later

Make sure u check compression also man. Also I repeat this a lot but its a good idea to have an extra grand or so in the bank in case anything happens. Not to get u worried but anything can happen. Also your not just buying the turbo kit. You should get some gauges and get it tuned. good luck

"Is the turbo worth it?"

Put simply, yes.

In more complex words; there are associated problems that come along with being turbo. ie blown head gaskets, cracked pistons (if you get boost greedy), running too rich, running to lean, high EGTs... but despite all this, there's nothing like popping the hood for some new aquaintences and getting "the nod of approval" or cruising past a group of pedestrians and giving them a BOV salute. emoji

Yes its worth it!!!!!!!!!!!

I turboed my car when it was around 72,000 miles. Now I have 87,000 miles and no serious problems yet. Just little stuff like an oil leak. I did a compression check before I turboed it and all my cylinders were around 215. As long as you have good compression you should be just fine.

I turboed my ESi at 75K miles. I am not at 78K and goin' strong. I am havin' my timing belt replaced this weekend (About time! I'm very suprised my car is doing so damn well....hhehehe). Well, after that my next big thing is a rebuild. Then up the boost and be runnin' 13's..
