#1527, "Putting a turbo on a non-turbo"

I have a 1G non-turbo low-mileage talon. I was wondering what all would be involved if I wanted to put a factory turbo on the car. I know a guy that can sell me a factory turbo/intercooler for $400, but he recommended that I just buy a turbo motor and swap it into the car. Would I be better off going with a new motor, factory turbo/intercooler, or aftermarket turbo/intercooler.

I actually bet it would be easier to swap in a turbo motor. All the motor mounts would fit right. You'd just need the engine, ECU, maybe tranny. I'm not sure if your gages would still read right though . You'd have to buy a boost gage too, of course. If you just put a turbo on the NT engine, you'd have to figure out a fuel system and keep the boost low. There wouldn't be many people to help you with tuning. Someone has put a turbo on an NT 4G63, but I don't remember how well it worked. I bet an engine swap would be easier.

the 1Gs used two different types of NT engines, one of which was a weaker and smaller unturboed version of the 4G-63T it's size was a 1.8L. They use simliar motor mounts and like Corbin said it might be easier to swap a turbo engine. You should be able to purchase a complete turbo engine for under $4000, just make sure it's a 1G and not a 2G
