#12585, "My day at the dyno :( (REALLY REALLY LONG)"

well, I took my car to th edyno today thinkign that I had just about everything sorted out. I took a set of heat range 8 recesed tip racing plugs and 5 gals of C16 with me. had some nos in my bottle, had th eprogramable dis-2 running, and ready to go. Well, When I got up there, we straped it down and made a low boost run (18 psi). it took it abotu average (300 horse to the wheels). A little less than before, but th efuel curve was a little off (seeing as I currently had NO boost leaks at all emoji ). so wel began to straighten that out, then stuff started happening............bad stuff. first, I noticed that my little electronic valve for my EGR kept shooting off (I even put a real metal clamp on it so it wouldn't happen.........cause it had happend on my street testing the day before). Also, I was getting SUPER SUPER rich on the climb to max boost. we couldn't figure that one out. went through almost the entire map looking for the bad plot (I just remembered the dfi has a pressure enrichment feature that adds fuel when boost climbs really fast this evening......DOH). I also was retarding timing about 6 or so degrees at 18 psi, and about 10 or so at 30. th epump gas runs were done with bkr7e-11 plugs gapped at .030, and we finally ended up with about 307 after th efuel map was straightened out properly. Then came th ehigh boost runs. We tried 25 psi first(I acutally figured out how to get the PRofec A to hold consistent boost to redline). I also put in ht ecolder plugs and fulled it up with the 116 octane fuel. take note that my timing was still majorly retarded, and I didnt' give it any thought. So I pulled, adn I got abotu 315 hp to the wheels hehehehehe. I was like WTF?!?!?!?. So we kept workign with the fuel map and got it just abotu right, so I said "let's crank it to 30". Pulled about 320 hp to the wheels. All this time, I was shooting off my little EGR thingy every pull. I even put a screw in the hose hoping that it would just block it off. shot it out. it eventually shot the rubber hose around the line off somewhere. I ended up clanping that thing as good as I could with vise grips hoping that would help me gain some of the power I had somehouw misteriously lost. it didn't. then, just as we were about to give up on it and say it jsut wasn't my day, the car made a WIERD noise in th emiddle of a run (sounded like VTEC..SERIOUSLY LOUD) and BAM 60 extra HP. again, we were like ???????WTF so we did it again. gained more power. I started looking around, and noticed that this time it had blown off my vaccuum hose going to my MSD map sensor. turns out 10 degrees of timing was WAY too much to take out for 116 octane gas. SO I manually turned the timing to about 5 degrees retard at 6K with the MSD prodata software and kept a close eye on my msd knock sensor alert to see if I was getting knock (becasue my Alex pepper dataloger is crap). not a hint of knock anywhere. power curve as smooth as could be. ended up making 384 to the wheels and 373 lb ft of torque just guessing that my timing was ok (I probabyl could have put more timing in it, but I was already on someone else's dyno time as it was).
So then we tried the nitrous. I had 22 size nos jets and 18 size fuel jets.......yeah, that didn't work either. went strtaight lean again and sputtered. SO I tried enrichining the dfi to see if I could compensate for it (25% higher IDC).........yeah, that didn't work either. it wasn't as bad of a spike, but it still wanted to go past 15.5 A/F at WOT. So I gave up on that for the day and purged all th eNOS out of the lines. I just put 30 sized fuel jets in it tonight.........if that doesn't fix it, then there will probably be a pro fogger kit in the for sale section soon. I hooked my msd map sensor back up and set the timing to retard like 6 degrees at 30 psi and about 5 degrees at 15-18. Just to be on the safe side (still have 116 in the car). So I take off out of there, and the car felt pretty much ok. no blow by, no noises, just drove like normal (and I noticed i had a rich spot at 3K and 0 psi).
I got on I-285 going to NOPI and decided I wanted to feel what 30 psi acutally felt like on the street. so I took off from 3rd gear (I KNEW 2nd gear would be useless) and GOOD GAWD that car is fast. it defintely feels like a 430 HP car. I got up to NOPI and told my friends about my dyno run, and as I was leaving there were some kids checkign out my car, so I figured I woudl leave hard (as usual). nothing fancy, just roll into 1'st and 2nd gear. shift at 7. well, it got rolling broke loose first, shifted at 7, started to break loose 2nd and WHAM! second gear was GONE. I was like........uhhhhh. ok. 3'rd. GONE 4'th, 5'th, heck 1'st. all GONE. so I figured I would push it back to nopi (pretty sur ethat it was a busted axle...........AGAIN), and check it out. yeah, there was no movement from EITHER axle or the ends. I was like CRAP, I blew up my tranny. So, I called my regular tow truck guy (I am a regular now emoji ), and he got some boards and picked me up and carried me home. jacked the car up to make sur eit was th etranyn that was gone. Put it in 5'th gear. Yeah, the right tire spun fine. I was like...Uhhhh...not good. either A. my diff really DID blow up (my 1300 dollar diff), or something else is fried. I also noticed one thing.......I could slide the driver side axles in adn out easily and get fluid fron the seal. so I began to think......hmm. what if I broke the axle in a NEW spot this time. Sure enough, sheared the splined end of the axle clean off. So I just knocked it out, and everythign else looks ok. I also noticed that I did not put in one of my o2 sensors all the way after leaving the dyno oops emoji. and I also noticed that I blew off one of my vaccuum hoses going to the black box for my cruise control (boost leak). all this on top of running low boost and going from a roll with an exhaust leak emoji. I am sorry, but this little red pile impresses me. hopefully I can get another axle next week and get back on the dyno with plenty of time and get some real tuning done and make over 400 hp to the ground. only time will tell. that was my turbo'ed day emoji
bring it on............

Despite the axle problems, it's good to see you got a smooth power curve from the dyno tuning.

384 to the wheels is probably more like 450 at the crank!

Hope to see that thing run soon. It should be at the very least with slicks mid 12's, prob even low 12's

384whp is a VERY nice #... my friend dynoed his GST spyder to 394whp on a frank 2 (about similar to a 20G armond was on) and this was on stock bottom end with no stand alone ecu. man i wish i was making upper 300hp!

Nice running Armond... and proof once again that for next years shootout, you are NOT allowed to go anywhere near a dyno within at least a month before hand.

No kidding. He loses axles, I lose clutches emoji I was on the dyno the night before the shootout 2 years ago trying to tune it when my clutch went goodbye. I also missed last year due to a clutch.

It does sound like a good start though Armond. You know it has more power in it. I am actually very happy to hear about the timing and how much you are able to leave in. Makes me start to wonder how much I really can run on pump gas? emoji

Don't quote me on this, but I've heard there won't be a non-turbo class at the shootout in 2002. I think this was due to low number of n/a turn-outs. So, probably means that if you plan to enter the S/O next year, you'll be going head to head with the big dogs(?)j/k--GS-T'S and GS-X's. Some of us did that this year (sorry I forgot your names.)

The non turbo class is gone unless there is a hell of a showing which I doubt because there never is. The NT guys can race still, but in bracket racing. The turbo 420A never was allowed in that class anyway. We run in the fwd turbo class which is fair. It only takes a 12 to win that class unless someone pulls something kick ass out this year.

Fly1, which car were you at the shootout? I am the guy that had blue hair.

I have the black GS with a light silver (reflective) tint, and TRMotorsport Snipers. One of the guys pointed me to you, but I didn't get a chance to meet you. My wife got sick (from the heat probably), so I had to leave. I got a chance to speak to VX100 and a couple of other guys (can't remember all their names). I hope to see you guys again next year, and I plan to stay the whole weekend, too. Last year, I drove up there friday morning.

yes, I remember meeting you there

And, even if they don't run the NT class (I am positive they will not run it) if we still run in the bracket class we've got a good chance to win a trophy (not may good bracket racers show up at the shootout) and if we show them that a large number of NTs do show up then it could be possible to have the class again the following year.

Dave B. has got to see a large number of NTs there before he makes the effort to run the class, and you can't really blame him as there is no point in him running the class if no one shows up.
