Actually, it is one of the better questions I have heard and is the one of the main roots of which could you would prefer. I did a search in the archives as this has been discussed before but that was fruitless as we lost so many old archives. What I would like is someone who is familiar with all the sizings of the Garret turbos that star provides (Dino, Stan?) and what sizing housing they use and trims etc etc.
The 16G and 20G are standard mitsu turbos. They usually have a 7 or 8cm housing. Information on these is widely availble. A good starting point would be searching dsm.org.
The S16G/S20G family is something HRC came up with to remove boosty creep and the need for an external wastegate by introducing a 10cm housing. It also creates more top end but at the same time more lag than a standard 16G or 20G. If you go to HRC's website they have a writeup that explains their turbos. I would look there.
If I get some free time I could try to compile a table with the different turbos and explanations, but I do not have enough info on the Star turbos as a garret turbo can be configured in a million ways.

..and there's far too many options (these turbos have been around a LONG time) to list all the specs..
I know all the star turbo's are 40 trim except the BB, it's 60. Unless you specified otherwise when you bought it.

Is there and particular advantage to having an internal or external wastegate or is it just preference? One could assume that if its external its easier to replace in the event of a malfunction?

Externals tend to flow more. There is a limit to the size of a wastegate you can have internally. Also, internals tend to disrupt the exhaust flow out of the turbo, creating turbulence that theoretically affects performance.
In the words of Corky Bell: "You won't find an internal wastegate on a race car."

In a nutshell its like asking the difference between a toyota and a nissan. They are both cars but the simularities pretty much end there.
The difference between the typical 16G and 20G is easy. The 20G has a bigger compressor and wheel
The super16 and 20G have larger turbine housings (10cm vs 7cm) than normal 16G/20Gs.
And T3/T4 is anything you can make out of combining T3 turbine housings and T4 compressor housings. Anything from a 250hp to 600+ combo is possible. On the Star if thats what your interested in its physically bigger than a 20G side by side, not that tells you anything.

Mitsu turbo's
20G=compressor wheel size... The 20G has two variations, a 20G with a td05h exhaust wheel that is usually clipped 20-25 degress or so or a TD06H/20G.
The TD05H exhaust wheel is in the 16G and 14B turbo's.
Like mentioned above Garrett turbo's have NUMEROUS wheels, housings etc...In Garrett terms a .50a/r .61a/r is what they use to determine Exhaust housing size's and mitsu uses 7cm, 8cm etc..For example the turbo in my car has a t3 high flow exhuast wheel, (there's also just a t3performance wheel you can purchause) with a 50 trim compressor wheel matted in a T04e compressor housing. There's an optional t04B housing with this setup. You see how complicated it can get. With garrett turbo's there a much more wide selection of wheels, housings etc... to be matched together. Matching up the ones that work well together with your engine size is the key.
