#11745, "More problems..."

Last night I was sitting at a stop light and the car felt like it wanted to stall out.. The boost gauge went from the normal 19 vacuum down to almost 0 and the engine started to die. I had to mash the throttle a few times to keep the car running. This is starting to happen more and more often, and its kinda pissing me off. If my engine is going to die, it should just die. I keep checking the compression and its still perfect. I've used two different compression testers and I get the same results. (205-210 per cylinder). Anyone have similar experiences?

My spark plugs are getting fouled after about 500 miles of use. What could cause this? I am not running crazy rich, and my EGTs are perfectly within normal limits. I am still getting 400+ miles to the tank highway driving too.

I love the 420A to death, but I can't stand having my car so unreliable.

Could be loose wiring at your VC1, or too high base fuel pressure. Do you get a CEL?

Mechanically you sound fine (engine wise). I think it's apparent your problem lies with your fuel system _at idle_ whether it be your fuel line kinked or your sensor wiring.

It's kinda touch and go with making your car happy under idle. Check your map sensor wiring along with your FCD and also did you do any alterations with your fuel pump? Perhaps something's going on there? Loose fuel pump in your fuel tank assembly? Here's an indicator...what's your fuel pressure gauge look like? Is it still or erratic at all?

You car may be rich while boosting, but perhaps lean at idle.

The base fuel pressure right now is just under 60. The needle is pretty still at idle...no problems with erradic readings.

I just pulled my plugs again and they are covered in fuel. I put them in 500 miles ago. The problem is definitely in the fuel system, I just don't really know where. I haven't touched the HRC pump other than to check to make sure its not leaking. The in-tank pump hasn't been touched either.

My o2 readings are around .92-.94 at WOT normally. Well, 5th gear it drops into the .8x area, but I really never boost in 5th much.

I checked the FCD and it seems to be ok. Everything is wired correctly.
The strange thing is the car was giving me problems last week, and I thought the 6 hour drive to college would give me hell, but I didn't have a single problem to report. Now its giving me problems again.. I wonder if the o2s aren't reading properly and I am actually running really rich? Would that be a possibility?

I tried calling Hahn, but apparently I was a few minutes late because I didn't make it in their 8am to noon timeframe. (not so great hours if you ask me)

Turn down your base fuel pressure. 60 is too high. shoot for 45.

For some reason when I put the base fuel pressure below 50 it falls down to 30 by itself. I had it at 45-50 when I first installed the kit, and my o2 readings would slowly fall from .94 to the low .80s
I'll try it again at 45 and see if it still slips.

thanks.

I get some wacky fuel pressures to. My car idles fine though. It seems like the fuel regulator that HRC uses has some problems. When I get some money saved I am buying the vortech FMU. I am tired of having to adjust that damn little knob.

Jeff, recently my car has been doing the EXACT same thing. My fuel pressure is at 45-50psi idle and most of the time it runs just fine at idle. Its when I sit at lights for a while it starts actin up. Vacuum raises like i have leak and car begins to sputter. I also did compression test and looked at plugs. compression was good, plugs were good but I had them gapped at .45 which was doing fine for a little bit so I regapped them to .35 and it seems to have fixed the problem so far.
