#11217, "custom turbo or hrc/star"

LAST EDITED ON 13-Oct-01 AT 09:59 AM (PST)

ok, here's the deal. the shop where i got a lot of my parts does a lot of turbo stuff. they just did an s2000. makes over 320hp to the wheels. (they have a dyno in their shop too). basically they said it would be 4300$ for a custom setup (includes everything but the gauges, huge fmic etc.) every kit they design for that particular car, so they don't use the same parts everytime, just whatever is "the best." i would also get some dyno runs out of this, and it would be tuned after installation.

what do you guys think? personally (no offence to the star people out there) i like the hrc kit better just b/c of the fact its backed/made by more reputable people. i trust this shop, and i could probably get some knocked off the price, maybe help out w/ the installation or whatever. and it would be a perfect fit and everything, no having to cut this and this rubbing that etc. but still, its about 1000$ more than the hrc w/ fmic. i'm at an impass.

I think you should go with HRC because its tested/proven and also there support backing it up from the company, and its cheaper.

Well if you got the money and want to spend it on a product yet to be built, then go for it. If they are willing to give your car the TLC that it needs with this type of application then go for it. Ask your self some questions: Are they a reputable shop that you can trust? Do you know anybody that has gone to them and had problems? Are they willing to give you some sort of tech support after the install of this kit?

Try and do some research on the shop. Ask them as much questions as possible. But if you do end up getting any kit hook me up with your header!! I need one!!!!

Mod List:

-Magnecore 8.5 Wires
-AEM CAI(thanx to endless73)

here's some more info. i just called the shop back and here is what they do. its a t3/t4 turbo, they would take the specifics of my engine, call turbonetics and have them make a custom application for my car. its a deltagate external wastgate (i think thats what he said) greddy type s bov, cas manifold made in house, spearco core intercooler (the biggest size that'll possible fit in the front of my car) and all the pipes are mandrel bent. and they dyno the car before and after, AND tune it afterwards.

they are a very good shop, i've gotten most of my parts there, the only problem i had was in the very beginning when i didn't know them well they scratched one of my rims on accident, but fixed it no charge w/o much hastle.

also, they would be there for tech support (and physical support) if anything goes wrong. like he said on the phone when i called him back, i wouldn't be dealing w/ someone on the phone somewhere across the u.s. etc. so i told him i'm shooting for around xmas time.

and yeah, i'll be looking for buyers for my AEM CAI and GREDDY 4-1 headers.

i trust them (the shop)...i'm almost positive that that is what they charge for everyone, civics to tegs to eclipses, its the same they charged for the s2000 they did...so i get the kit, the dyno's, the tuning, and the checkup's if anything goes wrong, etc. they usually charge 125$ per hour for tuning on the dyno. expensive as hell. either way, i'm thinking of going this route. i seriously would have issues w/ buying a star kit. everything i read about the whole star everything leaves things to be desired.

ps they're installing it too, which they said would take about a week (installing, getting everything setup right, making sure its perfect, etc).

Everything you've heard about the star kit is not true, 90% coming from people who dont have one.

Okay guys, How much does it cost to install and tune a turbo? He may be paying $2600 for the star and then the rest is install and tuning.

Find out what Fuel system you are gonna have with this custom turbo kit. This is probably the MOST important thing on a custom turbo kit. Don't have enough fuel and your engine won't want to keep the rods inside the block anymore. emoji

You also may want to see if they will give you any references for their work. If they won't give you someone's name or number that you can talk to, it may not be a good thing. Most shops that do work like that are gonna be happy to give you some references so you can check their work on another car.
