I reccomend the fail safe ones too- When they fail they stick open so it doesn't overheat, it'll just not get up to full operating temp. Which brings me to my next thought... On our cars you don't want to let them run hot for a long period of time. A warped aluminum head is not a fun thing to fix! Just take a real close look at your cooling system, it's a simple process. Belt turns the pump, pump flows coolant through radiator and engine. Just make sure you top everything off and burp the hoses.
Yeah, guess I failed to mention I did replace it with a new stock thermostat. I've also checked the system thoroughly for leaks, haven't found any, and the coolant level never drops. In fact, it HAS boiled over a few times. And after driving it, whether I drive it hard or really easy, the coolant level actually rises to at or above the full mark on the overlow reservoir.
CTS is replaced. Hoses have been burped.. keep thinking there could be a bubble in the block or head somewhere.. but I have no idea how to check that or fix it. I don't want the head to warp either, thats why I'm so concerned about it running hot like this. My last option, which I didn't want to take quite yet, is to get a spare block and build it with forged internals. Then when its ready I can pull the head, have it checked for flatness and decked if necessary, assemble the engine, and install it with only a few days' worth of downtime.
A lot of trouble to fix an overheating problem.. but really, I'm running out of things to fix. It's a mystery to me, one I think lies within the block or head somewhere. I guess the coolant passages could be restricted by a bad head gasket, causing it to overheat, but if I'm pulling the engine apart for a head gasket swap I'm checking the rings & pistons for damage too. And if I'm checking them for damage, I'm rebuilding.
