Well in my case I guess I'm refering to fitment issues. I have an aftermarket hood and it causes clearance issues. Just wondering if there where other fitment issues to consider.
Oh, you don't like altezza's? Too bad, your gonna get a good look at mine.

their shouldn't be any issues per-say; however welding on an external wastegate flange to the hahn manifold is basically giving you a star/treadstone/ebay knock off manifold.
i realize you prolly want to stick with your current manifold/turbo/downpipe set up, but i think it would be much more efficient to just sell what you have and get a new set up, comprising of the components you have.
what kind of turbo would you go with if you added an external wastegate to your hahn manifold, most (if not all) mitsu flanged turbos are internally gated.
so why would you want to go through the trouble of blocking that off, modifying your down pipe, modifying the manifold, then making a dump tube and modifying your down pipe for that also.

I'm thinking about this because I've had nothing but troube with internally gated turbos. I intend to run a 20g @ around 20 psi. What I'm thinking about doing is welding the gate shut inside the turbine housing and using an external. Seems like all the external gates I have messed with just work better, especially with higher boost levels. What do you guys think? Have I just had bad luck with the internal gates or have you noticed this as well?

I was just wanting to know because I have a caterpiller turbo and it's like brand new, it bolts right on my hahn manifold but the waste on the turbo is like 32psi actuator. LOL. Yeah right, this thing is so big my car would probaly spool it around 5000 6000 if spool it at all..But I was gonna do it for fun one day and see how good it runs and use an external wastegate and make a dump for the caterpiller ...

You may have fitment issues.
The hahn manifold is flanged in the center of the manifold which reduces the amount of room you have for the wastegate tubing. This may force you to angle the wastegate upwards more and that will hit the hood.
If you look closely at the Star/Treadstone design the turbo is moved tot he left side fo the manifold to accomidate the Wastegate. On that setup, a tial wastegate will hit the hood if the motor doesnt have a solid front mount. I have a tiny dimple in my hood from my old star setup.

just fyi, but I talked with Brad at HRC the other day and they offer there s20g and other turbos in either external or internal wastegated setups now. I also asked if you was to send your s16g core in for the s20g upgrade could they do the internal to external wastegate mod then and they said yes.

Yes but did you ask if they move the turbo flange at all? Hahn will make you anything you ask for and are willing to pay for. But the OP wants to use an existing manifold and modify it.
