i wouldnt say it is ultimate by any means, however, the sfmu does allow for adjustability of your rise rate, where as the standard fmu is set, and is only adjustable if you have the optional bleeder valve. hope this helps.

Not the ultimate. The ultimate is something that you can manually adjust fuel accordingly to boost and rpm such as a SAFC or portfueler. Megasquirt is THE shit and i would call that the ultimate in fuel tuning. Portfueler is right there with it but costs alot. Allows you keep stock ECU and car runs completely stock until boost.

If your choice is only between the FMU or the SFMU go with the SFMU no doubt. Its a great unit but still may need some fine tuning.

portfueler you say, if i do get that portfueler i dont need to mess with the fmu and stuff? im only asking this because i dont here a lot of 2gers talking about it. i dont know if i could handle the Ms right now, i have to learn about that.

You still have to learn a lot with portfueler, it's just a much easier install and does retain your stock ECU. Of course the price tag is double MS which is a huge drawback. You can also look into a custom 8-injector setup which would be similar to the portfueler but cheaper

Yes, that is the downside of the portfueler, its price. I paid 1150 for mine, but then again, i got everything:fuel line kit, aeromotive 1:1 Fuel Pressure Regulator, 750cc injectors instead of the standard 500cc, tach adapter, and pre-programmed fuel map calibration. The aeromotive FPR does the same as the sfmu. The kit really is great if you have the money for it. I just like the simplicty of the kit. Without any previous tuning experience, I did a pretty good tune on my friends srt-4 with the portfueler. And Hahn can put a base map for you to start with so it will run with boost out of the box with just a little fine tuning required.

when MS came out, people started shying away from the "standard alternatives" to the accepted SFMU setup. eventhough the learning curve and install dificulty were higher, those that switched say the efforts are well worth it.
8-injector setups were fairly common for the people wanting big HP, but your still gonna eventually hit a wall that only a standalone can pass through.

portfueler took what we and the Neon boys were doing and made a nice drop in kit that pretty much just required a good tune to get right on.
downside was (and still is) the cost of the pre-fab kit.

you can still do an 8-injector setup and not be laughed at, for its still a very economical option. with the major costs coming from the injectors, 1:1 regulator, and an Additional Injector Controller. the rest can be found fairly cheap in the WTB section.
down side is the the DIY-Error factor involved in making your own set up
also with prices on the HKS AIC-III coming down to the $200 mark it still remains close to a sub $600 setup, and varies only on how cheaply you can find the rails, lower manifold, and whether or not you do your own welding or machining.

and IIRC (Terry or someone confirm this plz?) you can still use a MS system to run an 8-inj setup if one were so inclined. (?)

i still have my 8-Inj components as i still have this crazy Shower-Curtain style ITB setup running around my shop/garage emoji

Actually, I think an 8 injector setup could do whatever this motor could ever put out just fine. I realized this wall that i thought existed with the portfueler since its map only goes to 26psi. Then i kinda went toward MS til i found out that the portfueler can do more than 26psi. Just have to load all the fuel for whatever boost you are running into the 26psi point on the map. So then i bought the PF. Just upgrading to 750 injectors on PF and plan to run 35psi......... as long as my Southbend FE clutch holds it with my extra mods. lol. But i do get what you mean. At times i kinda wish i went with MS to save the money, but i know in the end after its running i will be much happier with the ease of tuning, still emission friendly stock ECU and overall drivability of the car.

Have fun detonating to all hell at 35psi with your stock ignition timing.
