#104548, "was runnin fine for a long time and then....."

about 2 days ago i noticed my car kinda acting wierd at 4k ish rpm when just accelerating at partial throttle and didnt think too much about it and figured id get it scanned if it got worse,..so i wake up in the morning and started the car and went to get some gas,I get 10 bucks worth of gas and go to take off and it sputtered real bad and black smoke was coming out my taipipe so I lug it home and somtimes it would run normal for a bit then kinda buck as i tryed to accelerate,I look at my wideband it says pig rich 10.0 which is as low as the wb would even go but i make it into the autozone and throw it on a scanner and it threw the 1294 code which is IACV malfunction so anyway I went home and let her cool down too check out the plugs and this is how they looked <a href="http://s326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/spools420/?action=view¤;t=GetAttachment.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
<a href="http://s326.photobucket.com/albums/k438/spools420/?action=view¤;t=plugs.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> so i checked for kinks in my fuel line and checked everything over and when i checked the vacuum from the stock fuel pressure reg(i got both tee'd to a vac port to the manifold) and fmu and noticed there was fuel in both vacuum lines??im lost now but i also noticed my fuel pump sound like its straining,I wonder if its getting too much abuse since my tank is always on empty? its definitly getting way too much fuel, ill check the fuel pressure tomarrow and see whats up,my car wont even start its boggin so bad with black smoke shootin out...plz help

"autozone and throw it on a scanner and it threw the 1294 code which is IACV malfunction"

Umm... if its throwing that code why did you not check that?

I was really hoping for the code to finally show and its codes are p0352 and p0351 which in auto zones repiept says "a malfunction exs\ists in the primary or secondary electrical cicuits for ignition coil "A" and "b"
the receipt also says.....

"definitions
-ignition coil primary circuit is monitered for errors"
then last on the receipt it says

"probable causes"
- ignition coil fail
- secondary ignition plugs/wires or circuit fault
-poor electrical connection
- driver circuit fault-ignition mudule or pcm

ok well since all plugs were covered in fuel soot were gonna have to say its definitly not plugs or wires and im shootin its coil pack and not a short somwhere hopfully. luckaly I have an extra coil pack from a 97 so ill give that a try but the only thing is the 95 model eclipse has a different plug that plugs into the coil pack(its smaller less wide with a red clip on top that slides in to lock it) so i guess i'll pull out the test light and switch connectors (the 97 connecter is skinny and wide) since i pulled the connector to the 97 coil when i bought the coil pack.1 question, should I wait for a 95 coil that plugs right in?or go ahead and cut and reconnect the 97 coil pluggin and install the 97 coil?there shouldnt be any diference in voltage.thanks for the help

now what the heck can go wrong next, well many things but i fixed the coil problem but still running pig rich with no code(especially in the 4k-5k rpm range) i even changed the stock fpr?i do have a huge crack in my turbo mani do you think its not compressing the air right and burning rich?maybe fmu or dirty fuel filter could cause this?I cant figure it out, checked for kinked lines, cleaned fuel pump sock, what esle could be causing this fuel madness?Oh and my fuel pump was making i wierd noise but wouldnt that throw a code if you have an aftermarket fuel pump? Please input on opinions.

You won't get a CEL for installing an aftermarket fuel pump.
What is your fuel setup?
What is your fuel pressure at idle?
Is it always rich at 4k rpm or just under boost?
It sounds like you have a wideband 02 sensor, so what is the afr throughout the rest of the rpm band?

I would start with fixing that exhaust manifold.

yea that was one of the first things i changed out once this started happening,I fixed the boost leak had the turbo and mani milled flat and started it up today and wouldnt you know, the freakin car runs LEAN now?runs fine but the more I boost the more lean it goes.I'm gonna trace the vacumm line to the fmu and see if it tore somwhere,if that checkes out Im thinking my fmu is faulty(which is probably why my fuel pump sounded like it was struggling at first.I checked the plugs just to make sure my wideband wasnt messed up from the rich mix and plugs are white so im definitly runnin lean,I made a makeshift fuel pressure guage i can hook to my window and see what my FP is at,...short story short I'm now runnin lean under boost and the more I boost the leaner...sounds like fmu to me,is there a diaphram that coulda ripped?I may take it apart and see if anything is outa whack...thanks for the help guys.oh BTW my fuel mods are fmu/safc/stocker injectors but ive been running the setup for years so my finger points at fmu.

well i tried 2 different guages and my pressures are
static- 60-70 psi
Idle- 60-70psi
WOT- 60-70psi
i didnt change my fuel filter yet so I think ill try that next, what do you guys think?I'm pretty stumped,I wana say my fmu is causing this but im not sure?thx all.

Im voting the FMU is the problem. I would remove it from the system and see if the pressure drops back to normal. Just pulls the lines off and connect them together.

I'm with you on this,i did notice the fmu allen heads were pretty loose and so was the vacuum line the goes to the fmu so well see if that makes a difference now that there tightend,I also got a fuel filter just for maintance, hopfully the old one was created more idle pressure kinda like a clogged artery?probably wont help but oh well its a good investment especially since ive been runnin real low on gas lataely...

Your fmu isn't doing it's job. So either your vacuum line going to the fmu is bad somewhere or your fmu is just shot.

well I installed a brand new obx fmu and it did nothing, still running dangerously lean under boost ,I checked for kinks/installed new filter and just overlooked everything so tomarrow ill hit it up with the fuel pressure guage but i dont wana drive it to test the pump so I was wondering if i can pinch the line with some channel locks and raise the pressure while the car is ideling to see if the pump is even supplying enough fuel,is this good way to check the pump?

I think that will work. What I've done in the past though is to use an air compressor to blow air into the fmu while watching my fp gauge

I contributed to the Wiki!
EVO IX - just a really expensive boost gauge and a K&N air filter
96 Eclipse RS -awaiting registration and inspection
95 Eclipse GS - parts car

What is the rise rate on that OBX fmu? I'm assuming that you are using a high rise rate regulator alone to control fuel delivery, correct? If that's the case you need to make sure it's a 10:1+ regulator. A standard 1:1 or 3:1 will leave you way too lean. At WOT running 7 psi of boost, you should see around 120 psi of pressure, not 60-70.

the 60-70 cant be right, the guage sending unit must be junk?after installing a new 12-1 fmu and 255lph fuel pump and tuning with/safc2/uego WB ive been able to tune things down to a AFR of 11.5 - 12.2ish under WOT and idle is 13.7ish,I checked plugs and everything is burning the way it should so until i get a reliable fuel guage im a tad worried but not too worried with my AFR around where i want it,whats wierd is my walbro doesnt make the signiture "whine"sound like my other one?but it did the job and now im getting the fuel under boost, once i get a new fp guage ill let you know what the pressures at,In the meantime ima trust the aem wideband since its a few months old and nothing is signaling a lean or rich condition no more. Thanks for the input.
