#104281, "turboing a 420a"

hey guys

i need a lot of help. i am looking to turbo my 1998 420a i just purchased. it does have 100+k on it but im pretty sure all the major parts such as the timing belt have been replaced because it runs like a champ. i was thinking about going to a performance shop and just asking them what i needed to do to turbo my 420a. but then i figured that they would give me a bunch of bull just so i would go through with turbocharging it with them and getting extra parts. so i wanted to know what i would have to do to the engine to get it ready for a turbo. i already have a full exhaust manifold, plug covers, intake all that good stuff. what else would you recommend to get? i wanted to know where i could get a cheap turbo kit and what stuff i would need to buy. i was looking on ebay( a friend told me they have cheap good stuff on there for turbos) and i found some kits for 600$ but they said i needed to also purchase a turbo manifold? so please if someone could help me and tell me EVERYTHING that i would need to do and the cheapest possible way to slap on a turbo to my baby. also would i be able to do this job myself?

thanks alot

NOT gonna happen here kid, and if your gonna go Captain-"cheap as i can get off ebay" -halfass then your gonna spend more time with a blown engine scratching your head going WTF, then you are happily boosting

ther is no list, each users end goals are different, we are not a civic. . . wait ive typed this before

ahh yes

the reason so many people jump on this is because people post up expecting a list of stuff to go buy and bolt on. well our car isnt a civic or a 240sx, therefor apart from the "pre-made" Hahn and star kits, EVERY one is a one off custom job. everybody has different end goals and budgets. there are Too many options but they are all conected, read on.
the next reason is because there is tuning required to get the 420a up to par when adding a turbo kit, some theory and background on turbochargers, fuel systems, and engine management is required.
a few months back i started to write a book about turbocharging the 420a, i realised quickly that a bullet to my head would be less painful then trying to cover every option in doing a turbo. and i realised that i kept referencing tugbocharger theory books.

Corky Bell's, Maximum Boost.

avaliable at any book store as well as e-bay.
now after you read that, you will see a list start to form. now this list is VERY general and non specific. Turbo, Wastegate, Manifold, Downpipe, Oiling supply and return, Fuel supply, etc after you have made that generic list you can go through parts you want and fill in the blanks for what ya need / have.
then the previously generic list starts to take form FOR YOUR SPECIFIC APPLICATION (Sweet huh?!) and you can also see what you need to find or make decisions about, and you can also see places where you might want to upgrade somthing.
when your done you should have a complete custom setup with the parts you need and you will know the resons why you selected those parts and how they will all go together.
now you can start posting about specific items, ie "my goal is 8psi and a DD, do you guys recomend the SMU or SFMU for my application?" that will get you better and more specific answers (that will actually help you) from us then by saying "hey what fuel setup do i need to go turbo?"
see now thats how you turbo the 420a

Get the picture? call me an ass i dont care. here we take turbocharging the 420a very serriously. need proof? read through this section and see howmany people are making there own manifolds with actuall theory to back them up. read the MSnS section and see who the Briliant minds are that can build, install, and trouble shoot stand alone engine management systems.

read most any post buy any member that has "Old school 2gnt", or "Donating member", or "I WROTE the MUTHERFUCKING WIKI" by there name and you can bet your ass that they know their shit and i wouldnt piss them off (some bite . . . hard!)

i dont care if your new or not, everyone has to start out somewhere and thats fine, but we aint gonna spoon feed your build to you, you have to do the research and legwork FIRST.

the ones that "slap on" a turbo dont last long here, the ones that "build a turbo system" are the ones out there ripping asphalt instead of "WTF? Now what did i break?"

I hope you have a flame retard suit on if your going to come here asking questions like that. If my car ever broke down and I needed help, there is no one around my area that can help me because of all the shit I have in my car. What you gonna do when your car breaks down, and your turbo? Take it to the shop? HA, good luck with that. Going to shops asking them for help when then site is 10 years old is crazy!!. The Intel is in here man. Even if you don’t find all the info here there’s dsmtuners, neon forums…ect. This info can even be obtained on GOOGLE!!! Type in how to turbo my 420a. I would also recommend reading some books or articles on how a turbo system works. Hope you don’t be like the kid I helped down the street that blew his engine 5 times, lmao…because he didn’t have a fuel cut defender, or a missing link. He wonders why he keeps blowing his engine; you would think he would have gotten it the 2nd time he blew it….

Wow, I can't believe people still make threads like this even with all the resources on this site.

A BANME! defending a BANME! haha classic....
Anyways, forums are NOT for answering the same damn question over and over and over again. This forum has every basic question answered hundreds of times. Just learn to use the search, if you somehow do not find what your looking for THEN post a thread. Every one of us learned the process, every one of us went through our baby steps when first joining this forum. So why would you expect to have a red carpet at your feet with all of us as your servants....AINT GONA HAPPEN BOY.

EDIT: Its shit like this that cludders the search function while trying to find legitimate threads. Is there a way to just delete these? Or just not allowing BANME!s to post here in the tech sections until a certain amount of post count , as with the Classifieds? The freakn first thing they do when they join is post a question in tech with the answer easily found on their own. IMO it just makes it that much harder for someone who is searching to find the right answer without having to go through worthless threads wasting their time and testing their patience.

wow did you not READ my reply>? my reply may have sounded assholeish but it had all his answers for his project.

i helped him find a place to start and what to do! do i have to mail him my books too? then get someone to read them for him?
.
if you want that, then drop your car off at a shop and hand them your credit card it will be done in a month, then bring it back the next weekend when it explodes. presenet new credit card, rinse and repeat until your bored or broke

QQ less, research more

when ya post a question that isnt as general as "how i make go fasta wit da turboz?" and show me a thought out question that shows us you have an underlying understanding of the project you are starting then you will see that this forum is full of real answers from people who have done it before
