#104216, "turbo failure, whats it sound like?"

so I was wanting to know what it sounds like when your turbo decides to take a dump on you?I was mentioning awhile back on here about my t3 super 60 having shaft play, well the other day I noticed my turbo kinda not soundin right,..like the wheel was wobbling,I would stay right at the speed where it was makin the wobble noise and it just seemed outa place and I blew it off but today on the other hand i was driving and if I gun the engine it makes this terriable grinding noise which seems to be coming from the turbine side(im assuming since when i rev it up in nutrual it kinda makes the noise but not that much, just mostely under load and kina makes tinks and slight knock noises),I'm hoping its just the turbo finally givin its last breath and nothing on the engine got damaged.Ill have to take it off tomarrow I guess I'll see how the turbine wheel looks, but im crossing my fingers thats all it is is turbo failure, any input?

check the compressor side. The exhaust turbine wheel applies pressure towards the compressor side. if the thrust bearing is bad then the compressor wheel will be pushed into the compressor housing.

When the turbo on my Volvo failed, it made this horrible high pitched howling/wining. I guess that was the compressor blades rubbing against the housing. Either way, it sounds like your turbo is on its way out the door.

+1.

Time for a rebuild kit. Better fucking hope its your turbo and not your engine. If so, you're in for alot of time consuming labor.

You might not hear anything, we've gone through 2 turbo's and both times we didn't know until they started shooting metal into the motor that there was a problem with them if you know theres shaft play, go find a rebuild kit it should give you all the bearings and gaskets and will eliminate the play, but dont ride to much with that play or its alot of money

it sounds like snap, crackle, pop, rice crispies!!! it happened to my old t3/t04 star kit turbo when there was a clog from the from the t fitting oil line to the turbo. i was forced to upgrade back then. always check if there's oil flow before you start up the car.
