#10269, "Turbo Situation, What would you do??"

Alright guys,
Just got my star manifold in (YAY!!, and for about 1/6 of the normal price) to replace my always cracking tubular turbo manifold and now i'm faced with a few options:

1. Somebody on thepartstrader was willing to trade a T3 turbo for a t-25 (which i have right now) only problem with this is that I would have to have another downpipe made for me since the one I have on there now is for the t-25.

2. Make a "plate" or "cover" for the star manifold to put over the hole where the external wastegate should be and.........

<a> have my welder make an adapter plate for my t-25 (cause the star bolt pattern and the t-25 is different), which would save me $$ on making another downpipe........or

<b> with the plate or cover over the external wastegate slot, USE a 14b (well the guy who's selling it says it's technically a small 16g) ???

Help me out guys, I'm still sorta a newbie to the turbo thing, don't konw which one would be better, I mean wouldn't becaues the offset of the manifold, it wouldn't flow as efficient?? and remember I'm an A/T so, maybe I should jsut keep the smaller t-25 for off the line?? well any input would be appreciated. Thanks guys

Mick

Oops forgot to mention, I've been told that the 14b or 16g or t3 SHOULD bolt right up to the star manifold without any adapter, is this correct?

BTW, how can you tell if the seals on the turbo is blown? any physical way besides actually having it ON the car and seeing it smoke. I just found a local guy who will trade me his t3 turbo with his delta wastegate for my t-25 but his car smokes alot and he says that the seals MIGHT be blown......any help here?

I'd find a used T3 off a Sunbird, mustang, Merkur, thunderbird turbo from the junkyard and make a new downpipe (that shouldn't cost much). You might be able to cut the factory downpipe just past the flange from those cars and work from there. If you can get the 35mm Tial wastegate for cheaper than the deltagate its a direct fit or do you plan on sealing the wastegate port?. BTW you can get new bare bones T3s T3/T4s for about $450.

Well right now I'm seeing what would be the best way to go financially so if I can actually make an adapter plate for my turbo than that will be the way that I will go, however, if that's a no go, than I have no other option than to look for a t3 or t3/4 and buy an external wastegate. We'll see....

Since you are A/T I would have a new manifold made for the t-25 that won't crack, keep the t-25 for the quick spool up and lower end power and then get a 50 - 75 shot of NOS when the turbo can't boost any higher. What boost are you running now on the turbo?

T-25 is good for almost twice that. On a stock GS-T with 1g BOV, it does about 15psi. With boost control, I heard they're good for 18psi.

Yeah, I understand that but in my situation what would you do about the turbos, I know I can boost it up to about 16 psi efficiently but not safely, remember I'm on a stock bottom end, For those of you who might not know, I'm a turboed 420a with a stock t-25, custom set-up. Tommyboy boosted his to 14psi twice and on both times he blew his rings soooooooooooooooooooooo.....not doing that, so what i'm actually really wanting to know is...should I just get that adapter plate made and stick with the t-25 or blah blah...read above...
