For everyone who reads this I am rather new to this site but not to the 420a eclipse ive had several of them and know alittle bit about them. I got this great idea to turbo my "project car", not the daily driver which is also an eclipse. Ill post pics later. To start from the begining I got the car with a bad motor and leaking auto transmission. Had another trans from another car around the shop, so i threw that in to find that it had a bad computer, (would not shift from 1st) so i then decided to convert to a manual. Bought a 96 for 500 bucks and swapped them and put a new motor in at that time also. I then bought an eBay turbo kit and started having alittle fun,(no fuel upgrades yet)not boosting over 1 or 2 pounds so i saved up and bought the portfueler from hahn with the 500cc injectors. After i installed it I couldn't resist, so I took it around the block and laid into it and boom!!!Wastegate didn't open and boost spiked at 28 pounds and fried the rings, it still ran but had sooo much blow by through the valve cover. So here i am right now. I am leaning towards the howell 2.2 stroker but really dont wanna wait 12 weeks for it, my goals are hopefully upwards of 350whp. Is this a reasonable goal? I also need advice and the cylinder head. I called a local shop (Fishers) and they dont do porting and polishing, and for the hot tank, 1mm oversized valves, and valve seals it was like 500 bucks, is this alot?He also mentioned i need to know the cam and how much it flows and stuff like that. Any feed back will be appreciated.

i would have went with something that isnt an ebay turbo kit. Someone was selling a complete hahn stage two turbo system for like 1700$ but I doubt it is still here. I wouldnt say 350 is a bad goal, but you will need some serious internal modifications to even think about anything in that range.

Thank you mobil one for rust proofing my driveway.

I am confused by your screen name. If your actually a mechanic, you should know the book time and what is reasonable. When you go through school you learn Valve train geometry and how to completly re-work a head including valve grinding.

Personally if 350whp is your goal, stay 2.0 just build a forged bottom end. Leave the head stock, just do a base regrind on the valve seats. Porting is a plus but its not required for 350whp. 500 for a rebuild reasonable? depends onhow bad the head is really.

If you want to go port n polish then its a plus, but not reqd.

I am a full time technician with ase certifiactions, most of my knowledge is in O.E. parts not performance, I was just trying to get some info from anyone who has any experience with mods to this specific car and i respect your knowledge of this engine and anyone else who knows anything about it. I have taken apart the 420a engine and cylinder head and understand how everything works its just i need some guidance on specific parts such as cams or turbo size and things of that nature, whom someone might know from experience.

Is the howell 2.2 even worth the time and money? Is this setup any good? Is it capable of good solid hp numbers? Should i go with the 2.0 insted of a 2.2?

2.2 is going to be an opinionated answer no matter how you cut it. Personally, the money you spend on it and the wait is not worth it to me. It does make a difference but the wait time is what kills it. Howell is one of our oldest vendors but his delivery times are not what you call satisfactory. Some are good some are bad. you will have to make that call yourself.

For what you want out of the car, I recommend the 2.0L

I guess luckily for me i have a garage and a daily driver whereas time is not a factor. I am still leaning towards the 2.2 but what if I decide to go with a 2.0 what are the options? i.e. pistons, rods, bearings and what hp are they rated for. Is the 2.0 cost friendly? The price i got from howell was $2300 but im expecting somewhere around $2500-2600 after all the B.S.

the 2.0L pistons are either JE, Weisco, Venolia, or CP. Rods are either Eagle, or Crower. Cost effective is the JE/Eagle or Weisco/Eagle combination. Rods are capable of 600hp. Pistons depend on tuning, you know that.

You can build at 2.0L less that 1500.00 if you do the assy. Rods and pistons can be had for 800.00 from a few suppliers that move product through Ebay to keep their authorized dealer status. Total parts can be had for around 1100. figure machine work will run you about 500.00. You spend few hours and assemble it.

Or you can get a slightly used block for around 1200.00

If the 2.2 turns you on because its a larger displacement then go with a 2.4L. there is a lot of reading to do and a fair amount of welding you will need to complete.

Thanks for the insight on all of the parts. The cylinder head is next on my wishlist.

Personally, I would stick with the 2.0 also. If you are willing to spend that much on the engine, then you might as well ditch the ebay turbo kit. I will be running 8.6:1 JE's with eagle rods and stock head. If you're going to do it right, do it all right. If you stick with that turbo kit, I would personally not invest that much in the engine.

Exactly. Sell that kit back on ebay and get yourself a good quality setup.
