where is the best spot to put the bov? Lower down by the fuse box or higher up towards the throttle body? Im looking for peformance and where to put it so its loudest. (venting upward, venting downward, by the TB,by the fuse box?)

Performance and Loudness do not go in the same sentence. Ideal location for best performance is as close to the TB as you can, but really anywhere *should* be OK.

I have in numerous magazines and through out the web before that the best loctaion for your BOV is actually closest to the intercooler as possible on the compressor housing piping...

I am not saying this is true, but the majority of things I have read in the passed, this is what it said.

Hmm, that's like opposite from what I've all read. I have read that closest to the TB is where you want it. Anybody else hear anything one way or the other?

EDIT:
Now that I think about it, I have seen BOV's mounted directly ON the intercooler as well, but still don't know which way is right or wrong. My BOV is right in the middle of both the TB and the intercooler on my car so I am good either way emoji haha.

Mine too, haha.

I guess the theory is because you are releasing the pressure thats closest to the turbo. If you have it where we put it, I guess you are still leaving some pressure in the piping and its going back into the compressor, hence can cause compressor surge.

This is a good thread though. I am doing a new i/c piping setup, so I would like to see what others have to say.

The vast majority of people will tell you that you are supposed to place your blow off valve within a couple feet of your throttle body. I am here to tell you that this is not the best location for your blow off valve.

The best location for your blow off valve is going to be in between your turbo and intercooler, on the hot side.

Think about it. If you put the blow off valve on the cold side (after the intercooler), you are pushing hot air through your intercooler for nothing. This increases the speed at which your intercooler and motor become heat soaked.

By putting the blow off valve before, or even on the intercooler itself - you allow all of the hot compressed air to escape to atmosphere prior to passing through the intercooler. A blow off valve does the same thing no matter where you place it on the charge piping. Knowing this - it's only logical to put it in a place where it relieves hot air rather than cold air.

I always heard it the other way around. To put it as close to the TB as possible to prevent any of the air within the I/C or the charge pipes to have a chance to stop moving and absorb any of the heat within the engine bay. Although it may only be a small amount if any, most ppl that i've discussed this with felt that even a degree increase in temp was still to much. I'd like to see what some of the manufacturers say, I don't think I've ever really seen any concrete evidence as to wich is better.

I've seen people run dual bov's.

1 on the hot side of the intercooler and one on the cold side. It works so well that i've been wanting to incorporate it into a turbo car since i saw the setup years ago.

Eat that turbo flutter!

Doubt that would be helpful unless you were pushing 20+ lb or boost.

I like others have always heard that placing closer to the t/b is the best, but I guess that it doesn't really matter where it is as long as it vents the air in the pipes so there is no compressor surge. In all honesty I don't think that it being on the hot side is going to affect the air temp in the pipes by a considerable margin. It may but I would like to see some hard evidence from a dyno or something, not just a theory.

It doesn't freaking matter!

Look at race cars, they have them... everywhere!

Packaging is the biggest deciding factor for them.

If you want the best location for performance, it's no blow off valve. Your turbo won't last long however.

Race cars often run blow off valves without vacuum lines because they won't to hold as much pressure as possible without immediately killing the turbo during the shift.

Performance will recirculate into the intake pipe before the turbo even on a MAP based setup so little energy is wasted during the shift.

If you want loud, location isn't really gonna make a difference, buy my RFL. Ricers love it.

I gotta speak up on this one, unless you have an auto or can shift with lightning speed. Otherwise between shifts you'll get turbo bark and your shaft rpm's take a severe beating, and you'll waste hp spooling it up once you're back in gear.
I'd read that 14" from TB is best, but I have no idea how they came up with that number. maybe pulse, but then pipe diameter and actual location on the pipe come into play, so I don't think that matters. Hell the new SRT4's have them cast into the turbo compressor housing. I would tend to agree with the hot-side mounting if anything, but i suppose in theory you could vent more volume once the air is cooled, so maybe cold side is better. I put mine where I could physically fit it, but probably makes such a nominal difference it really doesn't matter. If you want sound put it where it points into open air and can be heard best, just not straight ahead through the bumper.

You'll have a massive wave of pressure once you open the throttle back, making up for the lost shaft rpm, yes you have to shift quick, but like I said, I don't recommend anyone ever doing this.

The reason I mentioned this is that it's a compromise wherever you put it, the BOV venting more of the intake charge w/ the advantage of longer turbo life, or venting less w/ the advantage of quicker recovery after shifts.

i dissagree. i used a small bov at first and still got compressor surge then upgraded to the ssq and right away noticed faster boost response when upshifting. the bov releives the backpressure on the compessor to keep the turbo rps up between shifts. also, i understand that it should be mounted close to the tb cause the boost is traveling one direction and if its mounted on the hot side it has to go back out the direction it came. i don't think it will make a dif. either way though.

You won't notice any difference where you mount it at 6-8 psi. Do it wherever is convenient.

LMAO this is soooo Funny. Well the general idea is that you want the BOV closest to the ground. Sound bounces off the ground. The higher the BOV is under the hood generally the more quiet it is because the sound is drowned out with engine noise and having to make alot of turns to make it to open air. If you want it the absolute loudest for your spectators watching you the put the dang thing BEFORE the intercooler, I mean right before it. Thats were the pressure is higher and still close to the ground and front of the car. that puts it really close to Open air and about as loud as you will get LMAO
