#102087, "Boosting up soon, need some tips so I don't blow up!"

Well I finally set my mind and decided to boost up after lots of research mainly here! I have an almost 100% custom kit (just missing a few things, kinda short on money). Here is the list for my kit:

t3/t4 ebay turbo- dp flange and oil line
fuel prs. reg. ebay with lines
450cc turbo injectors (did the resitors mod)
60mm throttle- modern performance
self ported intake mani-and throttle hole matched
star kit exhaust mani
Adapted fuel rail and return lines
38mm waste ebay
ssq bov and manual boost controller ebay
2gen smic
Gauges boost, oil prs. , a/f and egt ebay
Fuel pump 255hp wally
10.2mm plug wires arospeed
front bar arospeed
Safc 2

I was having some doubts about some things so I've decided to ask all of you who have already done this for some advice. I am want to be running 8 psi on stock block, with not a very agresive sertup just something nice and realible.

Here are my doubts:

1.If my turbo has a 3"in and a 2"out what size dp and cat back should I use? and size for intercooler piping as well?

2. Are the oil restrictor fittings really necesary to protect the turbine?

3. Does the msd do a noticeable diff.?

4. Since I was kinda low on cash to finish buying parts would you suggest that I sell the safc 2 to finish the project and do set up just with the fpr?

5. Is there a write up for modding to solve the fuel cut problem?

6. Should I put in a cometic head gasket or is the stock one fine at 8 psi? just wanna protect my build thats all!

I will much apreciate any help clearing up on any of this, and any other suggestions are most welcome. Plese just let me know what you think and give some advice or just share some of your experiences. thanxs and luck to all the other on a project.

1. 2.5" Exhaust and 2.25" IC piping will probably be fine.

2. Oil restrictors are mainly used for ball-bearing turbos. A standard journal bearing turbo isn't at much risk from over-oiling although a few Garrett turbos are finicky.

3. Ignition units can make quite a noticeable difference, although probably not at your car's current stage.

4. The S-AFC is up to you. If you're short on cash, you can certainly do without it and just use a 12:1 FMU for 8psi of boost.

5. You can either buy an FCD or missing link to eliminate fuel cut.

6. I wouldn't bother with a new headgasket unless your current one is bad. 8psi shouldn't damage the stocker.

don't mean to hijack your thread but it might concern you aswell. Does anyone know how the stock clutch reacts to the extra power?

Stock clutch can handle 8 psi just fine. Mine has been for over a year.

OP, to control those bigger 450cc injectors, you will need an SFMU setup at the very least to alter the idle FP. I don't think your ebay fpr will be able to rise the pressure with boost like an SFMU does. Also, the SAFC will not be able to do much besides smooth out your idle with the bigger injectors.

Would you explain what an sfmu is if you have any links to where I could buy one cause I really dont't know what it really is and how it works. And thanx for the reply!

An SFMU is a rising rate fuel pressure regulator, similar to a regular FMU, but with the SFMU, you have the ability to cahnge your static and idle fuel pressure, and you can also change the rise rate.

This would be nice to have with the 450 cc injectors, and the SAFC. With that combo, you could eventually boost up around a safe 16 0r 17 psi, once you built the motor with forged internals.

I have an SFMU for sale, cheap too. Pm me if your are interested.

You can run 250-300 HP thru the Stock clutch. I have run 250 for a while and its the same OEM clutch I have had since I bought the car and that makes the clutch at least 4-5 years old assuming the dealer put in a new one when I bought it ( yeah right that didnt happen)

Dude. You did better than most. Proof that using the search on this site pays off. Looks like you only spent about $400 on things you didn't really need.

-SAFC- Hopefully you can sell it for what you paid for it. I don't feel the benefits it delivers are commensurate with it's cost. Especially when compared to the $500 price to have Megasquirt up and running.

-Arospeed STB- Most of these are useless. Does it look cool? Only until you realize it's not actually doing anything. So there's another $58 that could have gone to the turbo system.

-10.2mm wires- Overkill imo. A plug wire upgrade is not required to get a turbo system up and running. That's $48.

-SSQV and MBC- MBC is only used to raise boost above WG pressure. If you have an 8psi WG set ep, you're not going to use the MBC at all. They can only turn the boost UP. At the same time, the 1G BOV has proven itself over more than a decade as being a first rate piece of hardware. They run about $30 or less.

-WG- If your turbo is internally gated, then you have no need for the external WG. I suspect that, with a Star manifold, you're set to install it if you need it, but might be worth double checking the turbo. Also, be sure you know where that WG is set and how to adjust it.

You're almost there. Sell some of this stuff, get some cash in your pocket, and have a complete kit by Christmas, imo.

They cost a lot new, so I would look for a good used one. The 2GNT classifieds will rarely let you down when looking for parts like these.

Congrats on the kit you put together. Once you sell the stuff you don't need it will be around a grand. Very nice. I would go with the SFMU right off the bat. You will find a ton of information on here about it as well as a ton of people complaining about it. I have one for sale that I just got back from Vortech. (I had to recalibrate it because my dad decided to take the bottom off in the process of tuning). Shoot me a PM if you want it.

O.K. so I have a question. I have read over all the threads dealing with using an safc. Some people say that it is junk because it messes with the timing and that the only way they would use it would be to smooth out idle. Others say that they have used it on up to 14-16 psi with no problems. So is it safe enough to use on our cars for higher boost(10-18psi)without if affecting the timing or alternating the map signal to a point of where it is dangerous. I just have a hard time seeing myself use one with all the statements that it doesn't work well on our cars. Just trying to get a clearer consensus on the topic of using the safc with the sfmu and larger injectors. Hopefully many will chime in with there opinion.

From personal experience with an AFC, I would use one again if I didnt have Megasquirt now. I used the AFC up to 18psi, with NO problems. I had larger injectors and without the AFC, I would have never gotten my car to idle correctly. The AFC gets a +1 from Mike.

well it's an 98 GS I'd like to put on some pics of it in my profile but I really don't know how. Anyways thanxs for all the info I will post some pictures of my kit and the build that's going to be done from dec. 18-20. I did stay with the safc and am still waiting for my mising link to arrive. I am also looking into buying a 2.5" exhaust throttle to put just before the rear tire to have tu set ups in my safc one 5psi daile driver and another an agresive 8 psi set up with open exhaust. let me know what you think.

And please a lil help on posting pics so you can see the project!
