#101437, "Bad Turbo?"

Story: Car was smoking white with hint of blue. Low compression. Attempted to rebuild by myself, thought was rings.(It was) Gave up with school in the way and had shop finish the job. Started the car up at the shop. Billowed out insane amounts of white smoke at idle. Inspecting under the hood you could see a faint hint of white smoke actually coming out of my intake filter. Mechanics told me it was an oil leak on the compressor side of the turbo. When I drove the car the smoking stopped coming out of the exhaust, only at idle would it smoke. Does this sound right along the lines of a bad turbo? Is it something a rebuild kit will patch right up?

Oh and don't freak out, there was less than 10 miles put on the car after the rebuild. Thanks guys.

well, that depends on if the oil drain is restricted or not. if it is, fix it. if not, i would definatly check out the turbo.

How do I know if its restricted? (I didn't instal it)

Just unhook the return line and look down it?

well, you shouldn't have to. if there is a pinch in it then worry about it or if its too small. most use 3/4". 1/2" should be ok. you could rebuild your turbo yourself. if not, upgrade.

got that megasquirt!

You also could be pushing too much oil through and its blowing past the seals. I had the prob, so I rebuilt the turbo and put on a restrictor on my oil feed line and its been fine ever since.

Thanks for the replies. As far as the return line size I'm not to sure. Maybe 3/4". The car is 1,400 miles away from me while I'm away at college. I'm attaching a photo. If the size is required I have a buddy that can get to my car and check it. Ya, that is the best photo I have on me.
