Hey, Firstly... thanks to all who helped me on my first question, this is indeed a terriffic site.

Now for the question (time to look stupid again)

A number of you encourage the use of an SFMU and a fuel cut defender (FCD).... I just visited a race shop today, to look at the kind of work this guy does... i've heard many good things about him and i just went in for some proof... well other than the imported r 34 skyline, i WAS overwhelmed by the work i've seen.... He did however, tell me about some sort of computer or some shit, that he said would cost 1500 and allows for tuning of the injectors (at RPMS and boost levels) etc, basically anyhting electronic in the motor can be altered.... to me .. it sounds like a stand alone, but i can't remember what he called it anyway his opinion is that the sfmus and the FCD's don't work too well and some problems may come out of them (a mechanic in his garage used smfu and fcd on his eclipse and said it didn't do anything good) ... is there anyone here who can second this? or stand against it? .... i have been fine... but now.... i'm confused again.... it's my nerves.. a lot of stress, this is causing and i want the BEST most PROMISING path to a street car killer..... any opinions?

- thanks,

James

What are your goals? The S-FMU/FCD combo will work fine for anywhere from 1psi to 16psi or so. At some point you'll need to start worrying about tuning the timing, but the S-FMU is a versatile tool for tuning the fuel across a wide range.

It sounds like he was talking about AEM EMS or something... overpriced considering MSnS-E.

SFMU + FCD = small learning curve and easy to use. Does not have the adjustability or the fine tuning capability. If it's not setup right you can still drive the car but not boost (unless you want to blow it up).

EMS (any) = really big learning curve. Has ability to fine tune it really well but easy to fuck things up. If it's not tuned right you probably can't even drive the car.

I'm also thinking he was referring to AEM EMS, and as stated, it's a way overpriced solution when you can go MSnS and have a ton of support here. There is absolutely nothing wrong with using an fcd and sfmu for moderate boost levels, tons of people on this site have done so. Definetly an easier learning curve than AEM EMS or MSnS too. IMO it just sounds like the guys trying to get you to spend $1500, but who knows maybe he just doesn't know about MSnS and if he did he would recommend that emoji. I can definetly understand someone that tunes for a living recommending a stand alone system

If AEM ever releases their new fuel/ignition controller it will be the "happy medium" between the AEM EMS and the SFMU setup. Its basically a stripped down version of the EMS and should go for around $399-$499 on the street. Once you've dealt with the SFMU setups for a while, you will desire more fine tuning and this or MSnS is the next logical step for most of us.

Seriously consider MSnS then. All the capabilities at a fraction of the price.

There is a happy medium between FMU and stand alone. Extra injector controllers (EIC) work well for our cars. You will need to consider the cost of exctra injectors and what it takes to mount them.

Look up Port Fueller from HAHN or the 034EIC http://www.2gnt.com/index.php?d=Building%20an%208%20Injector%20Fuel%20System

lets you drive the car like normal in low RPMs then when boosting a very precise amount of fuel is added.

These systems only solve fuel.
