EZ you got it exactly correct, and that's why I was so confused. But the problem is finally solved... and wait till you hear what it was.
All fuses and relays were fine, all connections were soldered well, I checked the voltages across all the wires and even that came up just fine! So if I've got a signal going all the way to the light socket and bulb... but no light comes on, something's happening at the end of the line there. As I checked each one I found small issues I never noticed before.
As for my two corner lights, the ones with their own harnesses, it turns out the tab for the brake line had been bent and broken off of BOTH of them inside the harnesses, but both parking light tabs and ground tabs were fine. weird coincidence.
Then one of the brake/parking bulbs wasn't working at all due to corrosion between the bulb and socket. after cleaning it out it now works perfectly fine.
Lastly, on the other brake/parking light, the ground wire had lost its connection to the socket underneath the plastic where I couldn't see. That too was due to corrosion or age I believe. I temporarily pulled the wire through and zip tied it to the socket to make sure I had a solid connection and it then worked fine.
What are the chances that all 4 brake lights would fail at the same time??? I guess they're 12 years old, never been touched, slowly been corroding over time, and suddenly I pull them out, cut them, solder them, plug them in, pull them out, in, out, etc... all the moving around must have been enough to break what was left of their fragile connections.
So anyway the problem turned out to be smaller than I expected. And I'm in luck, all these problems are happening in the old talon wires and bulbs that I was still using. The new eclipse wires are sitting in my room right now. So today I'll be completely rewiring everything. new eclipse bulbs and sockets wired to the talon harnesses, and while I'm at it I plan to wire it all up to work like OEM eclipse lights.
Thanks for the help guys. I took several detailed pics of the talon to eclipse conversion, and I might as well do the same now with all this wiring, and I think I might write a nice tech article for everyone in the future. There is already a great article on dsmtuners about talon > eclipse tail light wiring, but I don't remember seeing one about the conversion all together.
