#93682, "is there a trick???"

is there a trick to bondo? the issue im having is where im putting it on and than sanding it seems as if the bondo is crumbling like it will sand smooth but in areas it will be pitted and have holes and in some areas it will be smooth. i go back over it with a smooth coat of bondo and let it dry and sand again and the same crap? am i not mixing it right or what am i doing wrong or does bondo just flat out suck? im using it to finnish off some of the lines on my car like where the side skirts meet the fenders and stuff like that. thanks in advance

I'm no where near an expert on body work, but it sounds like you might be mixing it a little to much, thus getting more air pockets in there when you apply it.

your over hardening it . a good trick to mixing it is to put a small line of hardener across the diameter of bondo your mixing .do not just mix it either . you have to keep like folding it and mashing it till its one color .

Peace,
The statements regardin' the amount of hardner and the way you mix it is tru, but it can also be the quality of the bondo itself... The type from Wal-Mart for instance isn't good... Check this out... I was given this link from optikal... I purchased it, I haven't had the time to use it yet, but this is Official quality... Somewhat pricey and may not interest you because of what you're usin' it for, but if you want the quality, this is it...

you should be using just lightweight bondo for that . you should use fiberglass reinforced filer . then bondo or polyester glazing putty

you know its funny you mentioned that because when i couldnt get it to smooth out compleetly i used some bondo glazing putty and now its smooth as a babys azz, that stuff works alot better at filling in. thanks

the seam will crack out unless you glued the sideskirt to the fender with duramix or fusor or any other of a number of autobody adhesives. after it's glued you want to use a fiberglass reinforced filler like mar-glass and THEN do your bondo work on top of that.

how about liquid nails? when i originally put them on i never intended on taking them off and used liquid nails at the seams, seemed to hold pretty well, if not than i think it might be back to the drawing board, thanks for the help though.

yea I don't know about the liquid nails. my kit is molded using UPOL 904 adhesive which is the equivalent to the fusor and the duramix. it's been molded for a few years now with no cracking whatsoever. it is also what is holding my mr2 vents in the quarter's.
