Recently, we had redone the headliner in my car to black. Everything went through smoothly and it turned out great. But now, the Texas heat has made the headliner droop down in the middle. I used 3M adhesive spray w/ the black top... what did ya'll use to keep the headliner up there? Has it held up to the heat?
EDIT: What's that shit called that car audio places use to stick the carpets onto sub boxes?

koji, go to your nearest uphostry or headliner shop and have them give you a bit of their contact cement they use. my shop that i ordered my material through was nice enough to hook me up with all that i needed. even if you do have to pay..its WELL worth it. i used it in my buick (show car) and there is no saggage or uneveness whatsoever. take it back off and do it right and youll never have to mess with it again

DONT use spray adhesive, it will not stay, use the contact cement, we use it at my shop, the spray adhesive is more of a tacking glue we use for things that get stiched or stapled to hold it in place till we're done, then when it lets loose it has something else to hold. Spray the contact cement type glue, let it sit till its dry to the touch and then rub down the headliner and it should stick for a very long time. Its bad enough that after 5 seconds of sitting if done right you cant peel it off, and will have to use a sander/grinder. Can you supply us the name of the manufacturer of this contact cement? Does it spray on like hte 3M stuff or do you apply it with a brush?

any contact cement for upholstry work will do. im not sure of the mfg. you might can find some at hobby lobby or an upholstry shop. as i mentioned above..i got mine from the same shop i got my headliner material through. they had a big 5 gal pail of the stuff and they just filled up a lil container for me. most of that stuff has been thinned out to spray (from a gun) or you can use a brush. i did the latter seeing as how i didnt wanna buy a gun just for that.

well it comes thinned from the factory to use in a gun. so yeah, you just use it out of the can and it works like a charm either way you choose to apply it

did you guys remove the original material and scrape off all the foam or just glue another piece of fabric over it? there's a few write-ups floating around the forums for changing the color of your headliner. THIS DOES NOT WORK IF YOUR HEADLINER IS ALREADY SAGGING.
headliner material is coth with foam backing. foam gets old and turns into dust. when you glue new material to dust it will not stick. the proper way to redo your headliner is to pulle all of the old material off and scrape off ALL of the remaining foam backing. you should be left with a clean piece of cardboard-like material. i used the 3m headliner spray adhesive and have had ZERO problems the past 2-3 years. i think a lot of people get confused when they read the writeups about gluening a new piece of material over their existing headliner and think that it'll cure their sagging headliner problems. you must remove all of the older material or your new material will fall off very quickly.

Cleaning the board off on a falling headliner is a must, but if you try to clean off one thats not falling your gonna have a chore ahead of you, and could end up screwing up the board. true, but with our cars your headliner will be falling off eventually. depends if you don't mind hassling with redoing everything again a couple years down the line. even if you've glued new material on top, everything is still hanging from the stock foam and glue. just a matter of time...

when u redid the liner did u remove the factory gray/tan/whatever color it was stock fabric and just left the foam right? Then covered it in your new material. That is the best way I can describe it.

There are 3 ways we do it at work.... If theres nothing wrong with the existing liner other than dirt or maybe a small tear, go right over it. If the material itself is falling but the foam backing is not, pull the fabric off leave the foam if it's still holding good, and cover over the foam. i removed the fabric and scraped off the remaining foam backing from the headliner material. i suppose if your headliner is in decent shape you could leave it but i wouldn't want to hassle with having to redo it again a couple years down the line. might as well strip it down to the board and get a completely fresh install.
