I just read in the new Super Street mag about carbon fiber manufacturing. Looks to be alot like fiber glass construction to me...Im an artist and am familiar with molds and modeling..Ive seen intake manifolds made out of carbon fiber that cost around 1400 bucks so im hammering out a 3D rendering of a Intake manifold for our cars...My question is this...Do i have to have a special high temp resin to withstand the engine heat or will just any type of resin work...? Any input here in regards to any carbon fiber work would be helpfull folks. Thanks, Hellhound

I work with fiberglass all the time...but carbon fiber is supposed to be a completely different story. if you get one of those fibers stuck in your skin, it's a bitch to get out....
sorry this post wasn't of much help, but I'd call someplace that manufactures things out of CF and ask them about it, and where to get the supplies. and please let me know what you find out, maybe I'll do a little research myself....I need a new project.

You know I was reading a magazine a while back and I came across a sidebar on a company that would carbon fiber anything you sent them, and I think it was for a reasonable price too! Wish I could help you on this one, I looked in all my previous "turbo" and "super street" mags and couldn't find it. I think that it might have been in car audio or something!

well, there are alot of different ways to work with carbon fiber, some resins you've bake.. and some hardens by itself. I think any resin would stand the heat but you should ask aswell. Look into the yellow pages for fiberglass supliers. cuz those are the ones who cary carbonfiber aswell.
p.s. I don't think there's any special resin you need for heat.

Ive worked with carobon fiber befor. Yes you do need a different resin, I forgot what it is called, but if you use anything eles, it will be yellow. Also is expensive as hell like $80 fo a lil bit. Also when sandin the stuff, it sticks to you worse than anything and you ich for days. If I where you, Id just buy one and save yourself the screeming. Or you could just buy some fack vynal carbon fiber and stick it on your hood

You do need a special resign, but mainly for appearances. Most epoxy is slightly yellowish, but you'll need a special hardener that will cure clear.
I work with carbon fiber all the time (I don't make any carbon fiber parts, but the products we R&D use carbon fiber and other composites) and whenever I don't wear gloves I'm puling carbon fiber splinters from my fingers for days.
I've thought of doing some carbon fiber work myself and have read up on the subject, but I haven't done it because I don't have a place to work (my apartment doesn't have a garage). From what I've read you use the same methods you would as if you where using fiberglass except the materials are more expensive and a little harder to work with. You could probably get away with using West System Epoxy http://www.westsystem.com/ . You should be able to find it at most marine stores. If you were building something that would be experiencing some serious loads then you would have to go with more specialized (and more expensive) epoxies that would require an oven cure.
Let me know how it goes if you decide to tackle a CF project.

Thanks for the input...Im wanting to post some pics of the 3d rendering as soon as i get done with it ..Who do you all use for your pic posts?? Oh ya..The article on carbon fiber is in the brand new Super Street mag...Im checking on prices for the stuff while im online now... Peace Hellhound
